the black paint on the wiper blade arms of my 97 XLT are chipping and look bad. i want to take them off and re-paint them.

anyone got any ideas of how i can take them off????

i looked at them and at the bottom, where they attach to the post, the cover doesnt seem to flip up to reveal the retaining bolt.

any ideas???

I did the same thing to mine. At the bottom there is a small lever that you can pry on with a screw driver to release them.

Once you have them off, hit them with some sandpaper, then some black rustoleum. Took me about 30 minutes.

thanks for the info. im going to work on it this weekend.

I looked at the pics of your x. it looks good.

thanks again. :D

This procedure works well. I shot mine with some flat black a couple of weeks ago.

My buddy painted the wiper arms on his *eep YJ. He simply put cardboard under the wipers, and blasted away with the can....

I have a 95 X - I dont think I could take off the rear wiper arm to save my life... and it looks horrible right now with all the chipped paint. Any ideas how to take the rear one off?

There's a little tab on the base of the blade, where the wiper goes on onto the shaft that coes out of the hatch. You need to pry the litle tab out of a groove in the shaft. Um maybe you can follow those directions. To me it would look like:confused: . Hehe good luck

well i got the front arms painted this weekend. im pleased with the way they turned out. thanks for the help Jason_25. :chug:

Mbrooks420-
i saw your reply about the rear arm. i think i found the tab that you were talking about. i pulled on the tab to release the arm and pulled (until i thought i would pull the whole motor through the lift gate) but couldnt get the arm to come off. any suggestions??

Maybe the tab pushes in. I'm not sure. I have to pull mine off today. I'll do it at work:p I give you detailed instructions after I get home.

Where do you get stuff like that powder-coated?

How long does the powder coating last? I am thinking about that for the front two, but I am just going to have the back one shaved off. I don't use it anyway.

Yeah that's pretty much the way I used to do 'em. Make sure you do it inside though, you don't want the wind kicking up.... overspray everywhere.

I think I'd spend the 20 seconds to take them off, than to risk overspray on my truck.

Brought this back to say thanks. My wiper arms looked bad (dont know why 'cause the body paint is holding up nicely) and thanks to this thread I dont have to paint them on the truck. What a hassle that would've been.

One thing to add is on my '95 the wiper arm has be in the raised up position before the lever(tab) can be moved.

Ya know come to think of it.
As easy as Ford wiper arms are to remove, I am surprised they don't dissapear more often.

Maybe I shouldn't of said that
:(

Hmm is it the same for my 94 Xlt, cause im having the same problems as you folk, damn paint is chippin off. I'll check out what there like this weekend though.

Mine were worn so bad they were 50% silver....I just took them off and blasted away..LOL

The fronts are very easy to remove. I've always had trouble removing the rear one. I've read that all you have to do is pull it out but it's a lot harder than it seems. Any tips??
