i want to put a few mods for now in to my explorer

wouldnt 9 lbs with the XB be more CFM than 9lbs with the BD? assuming the XB is bigger than the BD.

I would assume Superchargers drive similar concepts as turbos

yeah the shop said they would make it smog legal with the forged internals.

It will be a little more CFM, but you'll be shelling out a grand plus to upgrade to the XB. If you are set on this and will have it for a while, go with the XB>

keeping the X forever, i have no plans on selling it

ok i got the estimate, $3600+ tax for the motor rebuild (tunned out the door), and $13k for the supercharged tunned motor out the door.

I think ill get it built and get the supercharger done elsewhere.

how much power gain would i be looking at with a stroked 331 or even a 347 stroked motor? I mean if I could go stroker kit and have really good power gains without the supercharger, I might go that route for a few months

It depends on what compression you go with to give some HP estimates. For the 347 and a compression that you can s/c, around 345-360 at the flywheel depending on the cam. The big thing is you'll have a lot more low end torque which helps in a 4500 lb suv. As for the 331, the power output would be slightly less but you'll still have good low end with it.

well when i rack up $4000 ill take my truck in and see how much to stroke it and rebuild it.

i noticed a lot of companys push away from using powerdyne, they would rather use vortech, whys that?

*p.s. how much HP can the stock tranny take?

Powerdyne isn't the highest quality out there. You'll rarely see any drag racers running them. But for street, they're fine. No one else makes a kit for a 5.0, so you don't have many options besides making some custom brackets which most people don't want to do. I've seen the stock tranny from an explorer in a 04 Cobra (coverted from manual to auto) running 10s and is a daily driver. Baumman claims they've seen Mustang with a shift kit/cooler/high rpm stall running 1,000 hp with our same transmission. How long will it last? Probably not long.

Good to know about the tranny... Eventually everything will get done, I have my speaker box project in the way a little right now, along with needing to buy a BatCap for the sub amp, so that will rob me of $200 or however much that is, plus whatever extra wiring I might need to order for the install of it.

The motor rebuild will be comming up pretty soon though, for sure this year.

well this november im thinking of taking my truck in, maybe late october due to the holdiays.

im thinking of going 331 stroked, or even a 347 stroked. how big i go is depending on the superchargers performance, the guy at the shop said to call powerdyne and find out if boost pressure will be lost with a bigger motor... he said something like "with some superchargers 6 lbs on a 331 would be 2-3 lbs on a 347 motor"

BEAUJ do you know if this is true? he said that supercharging the 347 wont be a problem

cool think about this shop is its an SCT dealer

Dood, your gonna be 12 grand into a project that will be major upkeep and busted driveline stuff forever.
than some guy in a SVT stock F150 will blow your doors off, would consider using the coin to buy something else,JMO

Spindle, that is exactly what I'm doing. The explorer is a money pit and a stock Lightning could smoke me. With the money I've spent, I could have a Lightning with a Kenne Bell S/C running 11s now. Kinda sad :(

It's not necessarily the bigger motor that makes it lose boost, but the heads valve size will need to be bigger. Therefore more airflow out reduce backpressure and lowers boost. The same thing with an intercooler. And go with a 331. More reliable from breaking than a 347 IMO.

but its my money pit :)

Ill just go as far as the supercharger... I dont think the shop will let me down if something goes wrong. if nothing goes wrong in a year then i dont think anything will go wrong while i have the mods.

331 it is... i really want to be able to keep up with an EVO im assuming if i could pull equal weight to power ratios ill be really close... but aerodynamics and rear end gearing would be an issue for me

Than go fer it, keep us posted on your progress, should be a fun project.
And make sure you can pass kali smog, visual inc:)

visual? i dont have to worry about that... i passed with true duals

Good luck
I put 15 grand into a twin turboed gale banks vette, passed emissions no problemo, would not pass the visual, could not get my tags, could not drive the car anymore.
Do your homework, great project, keep us posted, have fun. :D

Wait a second! Your top speed is only 105?? Doesnt your spedometer go up to 120? You sure you have the 5.0? lol J/w Because I have had my '97 Limited 5.0 up to 120 (I know this becuase I got an outstanding speeding ticket for this). The cop labled it as a racing ticket (I was racing a 2002 Grand Am). My Explorer is all stock (as far as I know. I have not been able to find any mods yet but it is pretty damn fast). I just thought all 5.0 Explorers could get over 105 so it just struck me as odd.

P.S. I dont recommend going 120 cause the jail time, money, and driving school isnt worth it! lol (even though I still race all the time! haha)

yup 110 tops now, could be the rims from what i heard.

for all that money.... you could get a SAS, SOA, custom bumpers sliders and probly a cage. regear and lock the truck and have just as much fun on the rocks as you could going 110.

P.S. before my lift, my v6 could do 110 sometimes and sometimes it rev limited at 105. scared the crap outa me first time i hit the rev limiter. thought i broke something. you should go with some sporty 17's. blingin 20's was last year. j/k. good luck with the engine overhaul and future s/c.

That's right, it's his money pit. Saleen_SR71, don't forget to send your original Headers back. We need to get the correct ones (Smooth Tubes) without the external EGR connectivity on the passenger side Header, as it appears in the attached photo. Some items may not cost anything. Thank you.

i understand. he probly says the same thing about all of us lifted guys. "for all that money you could have gotten a new cam, rollers, stroked and retuned... (or whatever you street guys would say)"

money pit.. haha yeah, not to mention time consuming. My g/f gets jealous. its sad really.
