i want to put a few mods for now in to my explorer

Procharger installed, just need a tune and an intercooled setup to finish

Ill start off with saying that I have a 97 Eddie Bauer 5.0 with rear wheel drive.

And right now the main thing bugging me is the loss of power at 95mph (final shift point), and the 105 speed limiter.

I was wondering if a Shift Kit would fix this... And if not, what will?

I was also wondering which performance mods I should do, and in which order (for best money to power results)

My first thoughts were:
Shift Kit (if it will increase my top speed)
Ignition System (MSD or Nology, I dont know which is better)
Custom Pully
(Possibly NO2)
Stroker Kit

I'm new to fixing it up performance wise and am totally clueless, I have friends willing to help me on suggestions, but them having sports cars and me having an SUV are two different classes which have similarities to a point.

My stock exhast headers fit my Edelbrock heads, I'm assuming that they would fit almost all heads, Trick flow twisted wedge being an excepion

I think you did good, a 347 is down a little on hp but way up on torque.
I just got a video uploaded of sound if you want to hear it

How much power are you putting to the wheels? I might have a race with an 05 Daytona, and I wanna know what im looking at.

To be Honest, I don't know. Which raises another question, Where to find a four wheel dyno, which I need because of AWD
But, this setup should be over 400 hp
I hope

uuuh you could run it as a fwd but i dont know how close the #'s will be compared to running in AWD.

Man it would be nice to know how much someone with a 347 is running. I have a feeling mine will be a little bit lower than yours. 2-3 more weeks till I get my truck back

There is a sticker under my hood saying all dyno testing to be done on a 4 wheel dyno. I have the awd system which has no selector or button to turn off, hence drive is always to all wheels. I tried to take front driveshaft off but transfer case still puts power to front.

well if your smog isnt as strict as Cali smog, its possible to be close to 400, all motor smog legal untuned im assuming id be around 325, tunned maybe 350's (maybe even more)

Id be happy to see mid 300's

we have absolutely no missuns testing in Kansas, and we like it like that.
You should see mid 300 for sure with tuning.
Are you driving it yet?

nope, still at the shop... should be done by december give or take few days. it was 2-3 weeks for the parts, 1-3 days for the rebuild and reinstall. Plus im waiting to get my new headers, they should be in some time this week (im hoping either today or tomorrow).

Well i got a call about the cam asking what i wanted...

he gave me a few options... slightly agressive and agressive... then started saying some other stuff then i was totally lost.... he said something about a converter... im assuming torque converter? am i right?

was i right to pick the slightly agressive cam? or should i of gotten something else? he said the more agressive the cam the more id be pushing the smog

About the cam, if I had my druthers back, I'd go with a plit duration, with more on the exaust. What are the spec's of cam, call and askk for intake and exhaust lft, int and exh dur, and lobe seperation angles, valve overlap degrees. I'm curious
Yes it is best to match the torque converter.
You can call TCI, or Art Carr They will make one for you. Highly recommended.
Last I tried, B&M couldn't, but if they can it will probably save money.
Also, you might try Coan. I sold my stock one to a member on this site, "enyago"
They were going to disect it and build to his spec's
My Art Carr converter is great. Put it in D and go, no excess brake pressure holding at idle, shifts from park real smooth, and launches like a horse.
Keep us posted

naturally aspirated 96 5.0L (non P heads)

Getting TM headers and stockish exhaust.

What cam do you reccomend? I have heard good and bad things about the E303, its good but not the best.

What is the best?

I have heard bad things also, but experienced none of them with my X-303 camshaft, typhoon intake with 1" spacer. Low end is MUCH greater than stock. High end scary.

Would you buy the X-303 again? I am getting ready to order a cam for my 96.
I was planning E-303 and 1.6 rollers/lifters (package deal from Summit)
I already have the 1" FR spacer, and will keep the stock GT-40 intake for now.

I will be using a laptop and OBD-II interface down the road for tuning, much of this is new to me. With the 4.0L's internal engine mods were not only $$$$ but also troublesome. With the 5.0L well, new ball game.

To be honest, I would look for more exhaust duration, knowing what I know now.
I might be wrong about that though. Seems the exhaust has a lot to do with low end torque
What ever you do, make sure you get a matching torque converter. It alone will feel like 2000 bux of mods, I promise

sweetness thanks. Remember this 5.0L does not have the P heads.

Once I do this to my ex you know I will have to do it to my gt-40p in the BII :)

SR71 any news? Kinda interested to see how everything turns out. You are going to have to post some proof that your X is faster then some ricer.

Sadly it's still in the shop... Its going on 2 months now. I called yesterday and was told that I'm looking at Thursday or Friday (for sure), but since the guy thats putting everything together wants to have Friday off I might not get it back next Monday which would really suck.

Its coming back untuned, so Im hoping the tunning Doug had set for me will be good enough to make the truck pull 300's. The guy said he will try to get a Dyno pull in to see what #'s it puts down, and I'm hoping the pull does get done... I better get a dyno pull out of this since I had to wait a whole month longer than expected.
