My 95 Explorer idles high and low when starts. It then cuts off. Once I do get it going it runs fine until I am at a red light or stop sign. It then jumps and sometimes cuts off. Took it into dealer and they say I need a By Pass Valve. Is this something that is easy to install. Also, what type of valve is it. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks for the reply. Is that a part that is sold at the auto stores. i was quoted over $300 and thought that was high.

You might try one of the forum vendors for the best price. You'll have to wait a couple days to get it but it will come to you for less $$

In the mean time I suggest cleaning the stock one, as it will fix these issues more often than not. You want to remove it, and spray carb cleaner or intake cleaner in the holes, onto the little shaft inside. If you grab this shaft with a small pair of pliers you can slide it back and forth. The most common issue is this shaft sticking due to carbon deposits.

Get it freed up, clean the deposits off it, and I bet your truck is fixed for the cost of a can of cleaner.

Once I get it back from the dealer (I told him not to do it), I will clean it. I did look at AutoZone and they have it for less than $40.00. Thanks for your help.

I have had the car since 1996. It now has 367,000 miles and I want to keep driving it for a few more years. At least until my son turns 16, which is in 3 years. Thanks for your help.
