Hi to all the Ford faithful members.

I'm swapping a Mountaineer 5.0 into my son's '92 Explorer and need a little info. I need to know if the 5.0 will mate with the stock tranny already in the Explorer. Anybody who can give me information on this situation? Thanks in advance. And thank you all for keeping this forum up and running. We're a diehard Ford family.

No way, and even if it would bolt up you wouldn't want to run it. Those transmissions are made of paper it wouldn't last more than 10 minutes behind a 302. Your best bet is to get a complete 302 explorer/mountaineer and move everything over from it. There have been several swaps done so if you use the search feature you should find a lot of info about the swap.

I've moved your thread to the transmission section. The engine is not made for that transmission. Swap the whole drivetrain (engine, transmission, driveshaft, mounts, wiring harness, computer, etc).

Are you using the wiring harness/computer as well?

If you are using the wiring harness/computer from the Mountaineer, then I would grab the tranny from the same truck as well.. The 92 tranny is not up to the task...

Now if you are going to use a v8 harness/computer from a Mustang, for example, the tranny is not computer controlled and an AOD can be used. I don't remember what transfer case is used behind the AOD but many folks that swap v8's into Rangers have completed the swap and kept the 4x4 capability...

So what control system are you planning to use in this Explorer?

Thanks for the help.

Hey, thanks for all your replies. I had a feeling I didn't want to use the Explorer tranny, y'all just confirmed what I thought. My son is the one wanting the swap. I convinced him to wait 'til he gets a good tranny and t-case. Thanks again, guys.

:salute:
