1996 explorer xl 4wd 4.0
96 ohv 4wd
what can i swap in and what are the difficulty levels on these swaps

96-01 5.0L V8 drivetrain with auto trans = bolt in conversion, difficulty level is medium, meaning if you can pull and engine and stab a trans you can bolt in a 5.0L V8

97-present SOHC V6 would also be a bolt in conversion, dif###ulty is medium again

anything else = more difficult and more expensive

your 96 sploder was avail with the 4.0L OHV v6 and the 5.0L V8
in 97 it was avail with the SOHC V6,

so because all 3 of these engines were avail in your gen II truck, they are bolt in conversions, as long as you have the entire donor vehicle, it can be done in a 3 day weekend
