Ok i put the rear up on jacks today and when i turn the rear tire the opposite rear turns in the opposite direction which is the correct behavior but how do i know for sure that the limited slip is worn out?

You just confirmed that the limited slip mechanism is worn out. If it was working properly, the other rear wheel would turn the same direction (assuming transmission is in neutral and ignition is off).

For the transfer case issue - jack up both wheels on one side of the ex. Chock the two tires that are on the ground. With ignition on but engine not running, put 4WD switch in 4hi position. Verify that indicator lights up on dash. Put the transmission in Neutral. Now turn the rear wheel by hand. If front wheel turns (it will spin same direction) then you have verified that the mag clutch in the transfer case is good. If the front does not turn with the rear, then the mag clutch is bad, or the wiring to the clutch is bad. To check the wiring, the next step would be to look for voltage at the connector on the t/c. If present, then wiring is good and mag clutch is bad.

Thanks Vargas i will test this.

Does the rear pumpkin metal tags identify the gear ration in the rear end? I find it hard to believe that my 2000 EB has a 4.10 Ring and Pinion but if it does that makes me happy.

42 is the build code for 4.10 open, and D2 for 4.10 limited slip. "Full" chart is here.

I have the D2 in my 2000 XLT which was ordered w/16" wheels. I think your EB came with 16" wheels, too.

Ok confirmed this weekend that with 104k my ls is worn out and it does have 4.10 gears stock,

So the question is if i plan to go to 33" or 35" tires in the future can i stay with 4.10 gears and add a Powertrax locker?

33s with 4.10 is do-able, but it will be a dog. 35s will be horrible. I would say the absolute bare minimum for 33s is 4.10. Basically it will feel like you lost about 20% of your power and torque. 35s even worse. For 33s I would say 4.56 is a good ratio for street/off road mix. If its going to be a mostly off road rig, then go to 4.88. For 35s 4.56 would be the bare minimum. 5.13s to be decent, and for a good trail rig I would go deeper than that. Just my $.02 though.

roverz,

I ammended my earlier statement about LS testing. Test was not valid unless driveshaft was free to turn (transmission in N).

I think you'll be fine on 31s with 4.10 a/r. It is comparable to running a stock size tire with 3.73 (the most common a/r in Explorers) Can always change a/r later if you want more go.

You will need to get the carrier from an open diff to add that locker. Carrier in the factory limited slip diff does not fit aftermarket locker.

Good find. I hadn't seen it before. That unit is available for o.e. ls diff or open. Price difference is about $25 (open is cheaper, but the cost of a junkyard carrier will make it equal).

There are cheaper ones, by a couple hundred bucks, but there is a trade off. The ratcheting lockers are great for off-roading, but are less pleasant the rest of the time. If you are going to spend most of the time on road, the couple hundred more for this one is money well spent.

4:10 with 33's is not a dog, that is what i have , i can spin the 33's on pavement with a 4.0 ohv engine,

What options do i have with my front IFS Dana 35 i think it has a ls but with worn out discs should i just have this rebuilt for now since with a rear lockers and 32 -33 " tires i dont imagine i will get myself into situations where dual lockers are demanded?

Your front axle is not a limited slip. No Explorers came with a LS in the front from the factory.
