Got my K&N installed yesterday. Haven't driven it much yet, but seems like it has a little more response and it sounds cool when you give it more than half throttle. :D

it would fit a first generation explorer if we relocated the battery......

looks great. for some reason your engine does look like the OHV V-6. maybe just because the SOHC plastic cover is off.

or you could just buy the chrome intake kit from Ben. that's made for the 91-94 explorers :)

nope, that looks like an OHV. I think KN developed the Gen II kit and now only sells it instead of the Gen I. Could be wrong though.

Im almost 100 percent sure thats an OHV, cause it sure as hell doesnt look ANYTHING like my 2000 SOHC.

BUT... it's a 1999 explorer SPORT.

dont all 99 sports have the SOHC?

Not manuals.

hi
i want to know if you are hvaing trouble with your gen II because i heard someone talking about hearing some whistling noise after it was installed
is this true because i was thinking of buying one myself...
any input will be helpful

My engine looks like an OHV beacuse it is an OHV. :) Alec hit it on the nose. The manual transmission was only available with the OHV at that time.

The GenII kit for my OHV is 57-2527. This only applies to 97-00 Explorers that have the flat panel factory filter. There is one available for the SOHC, too. I got it from www.4filters.com.

As far as the installation goes, I haven't had any problems with unusual sounds such as whistling. The only thing I have noticed is it seems to be slightly rubbing the hood insulation at one place. I'm going to take care of that this weekend.

4filters is a great place, awesome customer service. The part number for the SOHC in the 2001+ Sport Trac, Ranger etc. is 57-2529-1.

Ahh nice! Can't wait for the 2002 model!

can i get one of these for my 96 v8?

Oooooo I must have one of these.......

Gotta question, will the GenII fit my OHV that has a cylindrical stock air box and filter?

Ok, I have a Question,
I have a 1997 Sport, OHV Engine, Cone stlyle Filter.
Why can't I get this Filter Kit? Why does it have to be a Flat Filter originally?

*K&N Generic Too*

K%26N.jpg

I made a plate to mount this K&N filter to the MAF Sensor in my '98 4.0 OHV. It originally had the square airbox. All you have to doto make a plate is trace out the MAF Sensor. Cut out the hole (3" diameter if I remember correctly). Line up with the MAF and drill the four mounting holes. Weld a thin piece of 3"OD pipe to the plate and it's done. The filter is from Advance Auto Parts. I don't know the part number. I think it is a generic fit with a 3"ID and obout 9-10" long. There was a noticeable increase in HP and the cool sound is there also. The intake tube remains stock, but for a $50.00 investment I don't mind!

We did a test on my brother's 2002 Silverado. He bought the K&N Conical filter to replace his stock airbox. It was a direct bolt on and the increase was noticeable. A friend of ours just sold his truck and had the GenII which he took off before selling. My brother bought it for $50.00 and installed it...air intake tube, conical filter and under hood air deflector. There was a noticeable improvement but not enough to justify the $250 it would have cost him to buy the system brand new.

**********
I'm not putting down the K&N system...I just wanted to pass on the info that a home-made system can work very well if someone is thinking about making one. It is cheap and easy to make and saves lots of money!
