installing a kill switch to my 92 explorer

You can also hide a boat battery switch somewhere and jetski kill switches also work well.

Cool trick, did this one today, thanks for the excellent tutorial.

To keep from tearing too much apart I just pulled up the passenger carpet halfway, undid the 2 screws in the front of the console, drilled a hole in the right bottom corner of the console and fed the wires under the carpet with a hanger. Clean, neat and done in an hour. One thing which I would want to do is make that little tray behind the switch slide forward (and backwards) completely hiding the switch. Theres a chance a thief with a flashlight would look in the console and spy the switch even though it is is pretty well hidden. But I still feel better until I get better security and it will add an extra touch for those that already have some security.

Another way to put an effective kill switch is to wire it into the coilpack so it kills power to the coils. Back when I had a '92 with a stickshift, I did that so no one could bumpstart the vehicle. They can crank it to their heart's delight but it won't start...

Bump! Back from the dead. What is the consensus best way to wire the kill switch? Fuel pump inertia cut-off? Where is the FPI switch in a second gen? I wanna get a kill switch done as one of my next few mods before I move, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Pretty slick install. Nice work!

The way I like to do it is like this:
You will need:
Switch of your choice (toggle, etc)
Maybe 10 Feet of wire (Leaves room for sneaky wiring)
Two flat male wire connectors
An in-line fuseable link
Wire nuts

First, find and remove the"IGN" fuse. Now Attach one flat male connector to one end of the wire and plug it into one side of the ign. fuse space. Now add the fuseable link and put the fuse in it. After the link comes the toggle switch (or any other switch of your choice). Run the switch to a hidden location known only to you or trustem family members. Run a length of wire from the other prongs of the switch back to the fuse location and plug the other male connector into the other side of the IGN fuse space. And voila, kill switch.

Get creative with the kill switch location. For my brothers previous car, we wired a switch that had to remain pressed (sorry dont know the term) and connected it to the park break release. So you had to keep the break release pulled to start the car, very very sneaky. The car will crank all day but isnt going anywhere. If anyone disagrees, please let me know, this is just my way of doing it and I dont want to give out bad advice.

94Jo,

Wouldn't people be able to get around that by jumping the starter solenoid? From reading through this thread that's the feeling I'm getting. I'm trying to find the safest way/most difficult way for a crook to defeat. I'm also going to include a dummy toggle switch in a relatively easy to spot location to further confound, but I'm not sure the best way to do the kill switch itself.

Well, the starter can turn all it wants, the engine will turn over but will not start without the IGN fuse, which will be turned off with the switch.

i only saw one person mention this but the easiest 'kill swith'/'dead switch' would be a battery ground disconnect wouldnt it? at least in my opinion.. it has the least amount of wiring, youre not splicing into any part of the vehicles wiring and it effectively prohibits anyone from starting the vehicle. just a thought.

Ignition Kill / flashing LED

This is a schematic of one I built for my friends Toyota pickup, it works great, when the ignition is turned off the LED flashes, and after you turn the ignition back on you have to push the momentary switch and then the LED goes out and the vehicle will start, if the button is not pushed before you try to start the engine will crank but not fire. All we used was 2 bosh style relays and a monetary push button (hidden under the dash) and some wire, we also designed it so if one of the relays went bad we could just unplug 2 wires from the relay and hook them back up direct and it would bypass the relay.

Cept for three things:
you have to popthe hood disable the vehicle(hassle)

Its easy for a thief to popthe hood and notice the huge Handle on the negative batt terminal. (low effectiveness)

Everytime you do it you'll lose your radio presets(hassle)

Like some have said the best way to do it is to install the switch in series with the fuel pump power circuit.

Cause the starter relay is easy to bypass all you need is a screwdriver.

And that way the thief thinks there is something wrong cause the engine will crank but not turn over.

anybody think of the fake cigarette lighter socket ? take out the lighter element guts ( coil) and solder another wire to complete the circut ....then maybe wire it to the fuel pump leads. so in order to start the truck the cigarette lighter had to be pushed in to make a complete circut ( a switch ) but no other toggles or known types of switches to be found by a thief and bypassed. hides in plain site and also you can take it with you when you leave the truck. just a idea i had !?!

did i mention that i used to install alarm system's in house's !

I think the fuel pump cutout sounds like the best idea. I'm not to worried about it myself, but I might just do this...
