I recently did the intake on my 4.0 OHC with a Volant model. I was wondering how important it was to change over to a high flow exhaust like a flowmaster cat back? I am getting a noticable improvement from the intake but I have heard others say that you don't truly get the full benefits of the intake until you install a free flow exhaust.

On a recent episode of horsepower TV they took a 2003 Mustang GT and upgraded the exhaust and intake taking dyno runs after each upgrade. The Flowmaster exhaust gave them 6hp at the wheels and the K&N gave them 10hp at the wheels. They then went on to add a 100hp shot wet nitrous shot, not to shabby.

I was kind of surprised that the intake bumped hp more than the exhaust though, always thought free flowing exhaust was the way to go??

Opinions or answers are welcome :D

Bettering the intake without doing the same for the exhaust is like a hug without the squeeze.

For best results an exhaust upgrade is essential.

Yep, if you're gonna flow more air into the motor, you need to upgrade the exhaust to flow more out.

Quicker in + quicker out = Quicker Explorer.

You will get A LOT of diferent opinions on muffelers. Most people with the SHOC run 2.5 inch pipe from the cat back. Flowmaster and Bora ( sp? ) seem to be the most popular muffeler. Which one is up for debate.

I have a Flowmaster SUV 50 with 2.5 and no resonator. It performs well, but tends to be a little too loud at times for my prefrance.

Borla systems are much higher quality than Flowmaster and come with a million mile warranty, but they also cost much more than Flowmaster. Flowmaster makes a good exhaust system....Borla makes a great exhaust system. You can get a good Flowie system for under $200. Be prepared to pay over $400 for a Borla system.

Thanks guys... Was considering either a Flowmaster SUV muffler or the MagnaFlow in Dual in Dual out 2.5" configuration. Some say the magnaflow sounds tinny on the V6 SOHC though.

I didn't like Magnaflow on my old Sport (SOHC). Sounded very ricey at times. The Flowmaster SUV 50 sounded much better, but I eventually put on an aftermarket resonator to quieten it in the cab.
