I was bored and looking at tire rack last night. I see they have 35x12.5 mtr's for $155 a tire. Now to me this seems like a great deal considering when I was shopping for my 32's they had the 31x10.50s on sale for $ 150 and usually sell them for 200 a piece, but then again The dealers in LAX may be ripoff artists.
I have heard phenominal things about these tires, and I know the Rick is running them as well as TDavis
any feed back about these tires is would be great.
My other question is what is the actual height.
I know rick said they are far taller than his baja claws that measured the same size and my 32's I have now only measure 30 inches. I dont know if I can fit a "big" 33 or a "small" 35 if you know what I mean about the actual size of tires,
these will be on my 15x8 rims, and I also wanted to pass on what I thought was a deal at tirerack.com

The MT/Rs are huge, very close to advertised size. I tried to test fit 35s and also the metric equivalent 315/75r16 to see how much front wheelwell hacking it would take to put them on mine.

A BFG AT ko in 285/75r16 like what I wear now measures very close to its size listed on the BFG site (32.9 inches) though I've noticed it is maybe a little less that that in actuality. I've got 40k miles treadwear on mine and they are still 32s. If you look on Goodyear's site they say the 35" MTR measures 34.4. I thought, shoot, certainly I can figure out how to fit in another measly inch and a half (3/4 radius) difference. Nope: not just no, but Hell No. No friggin' way.

Go to a tire shop and roll out a BFG AT ko in 285/75r16 and roll it next to a 35" MTR. There is at least a full two inch difference in the tires. Those MTRs are dang close to a true 35.

Gerald do u think u will have 35's on by Moab

Thanks Gerald, From what you are telling me, if I were to go out and buy a MTR even in a 33 tomorrow, I would be dang close to increasing my 32 posers at 30 inches to a true 33 which would be like a 3" gain in diameter or a 1.5" gain in height and clearance
I like gaining clearance

Dannyboy, I couldn't tell you, I have no personal experience with these tires. I have heard good things about them, however, and at the price you mentioned I might consider them over the 36x1250x15 TSL SX's I was going to buy soon, which run closer to $180 a piece. Does anyone have any information about the sidewall strength on the Goodyear MT/R tires? One thing that I really like about the TSL SX tires is the added sidewall lugs for extra aired-down traction and sidewall strength. Maybe I'll just break down and buy the 37x13x15 Boggers.

37's Dam well, I suggest going to your neighborhood Goodyear dealer and checkking them out. Like I said they sell the 31x10.5 for 200 and we are talking about far cheaper prices on www.tirerack.com but I dont think tirerack sells tsl, or swamper. Maybe, Also Stadx2 runs these. I am going to PM him and rick to post here.

I like the MT'Rs on the rocks... with a twist :D J/K

They do work very well off-road, but they are a bit more squirmy on the road than my Claws were. The Claws have such a stiff sidewall they seem to handle better on the street.

I haven't went any lower than 8psi with my MT/Rs even with the beadlocks. I just don't like the way it looks to have that squishy sidewall all flattend out. The Claws when aired down to 5 psi use the side lugs as part of the overall tread, it looks really cool when those are aired down.

I haven't figured out if the MT/Rs are really "all that" or if they are on so many rock crawlers cuz Goodyear gives them to the top competitors.

Yep, I believe you would. And you have to realize that a two inch to three inch difference in diameter is huge. Go for the 33's and I bet you'll be happy as can be and you won't have to resort to the major sheetmetal modifications it will require to fit 35s on.

Even after my last post, yes I do. I've got till next May to figure it out. I'm definately having to go to plan B though. Actually, maybe it's plan F or Z by now, truth be told Dead Link Removed

I can hack out the inside of my fenderwells and the Eddie Bauer flares will still hide it so that's not a problem. It's the rear of the front fenderwells that is the problem. I WILL have to cut out real sheetmetal at the rear of the front fenderwell and there's also no way to keep my pretty running boards while those 35's are on.

I plan on two more inches of lift. I'll bite the bullet and go to a 3" body lift instead of my current two inch. I'll also fabricate drop brackets to drop my front diffy down one inch and then go to a 3" torsion lift. OME springs with my Warrior shackles should nicely match that in the rear.

I still have my old armored running boards in addition to my new pretty ones. My current rumination on the matter is to run two sets of tires - 33's for daily and minor explorations, and the bigun's for major runs like Moab. For those I'll put the 35's on and my old beatup armored running boards and cut the running boards back an inch to clear the tires. I don't think it will look all that bad, though it may be not something nice enough for Sunday go-to-meeting.

We'll see. I've got all year and a lot more suds intake to figure this one out. Dead Link Removed

PS/ Regarding the strength of the Goodyears, I have participated on two local runs with vehicles that had MT/Rs. Also if memory serves me correctly Rick had already dumped his Claws and had his MT/Rs on in Moab last May and I didn't see him take any damage. One of the local runs I participated in was a major one with over a hundred fifty vehicles. The BFGs like I have are supposed to have fairly tough sidewalls with their "TriGuard" triple sidewall construction. I looked at Jeeps returning from identical extreme trails - some with BFG MTs and ATs and some with the new Goodyear MT/Rs - and several of the BFGs were slit and showed some damage, though most held up as advertised and only one or two actually failed and went flat. I know mine have held up, but they show several scars and sidewall cuts.

For the life of me I couldn't find so much as a scratch on ANY of the Goodyear MT/Rs. I mean nothing but very minor mars: you could clean them up when you got home and not tell they left the parking lot. If it was only a couple of Jeeps I would have thought, well it's different individual driving styles. But comparing over a half dozen of each, nah, there's more evidence looking at me here.

Those MT/Rs may be every bit as good as the press they are getting. Time will tell; and I am not willing to base a permanent opinion on the evidence of personal witness of just a couple of runs and a half dozen examples, but I gotta tell ya I am extremely impressed so far.

I've already got slits in my MT/Rs. Looks like someone took a razor blade and made a couple 2" slits. So far they haven't affected anything or gotten any worse.

Thanks Guys
I know first hand knowledge is the best way to get the real results from a product. Sure Goodyear has a solid name and advertises the hell out of their tires, and also sure BFG advertises the hell out of theirs too along with a guarentee that if you blow one, NO MATTER WHERE YOU ARE they will pay for the fix and the moblile repair trip.. Well they could sell pure crap and be on the road of repairs all the time but there not, Both brands are good tires. I even like my Reguls, but it is sad to buy a 32" tire and have it only be 30". That is why they fit on my truck with only the 3" body lift. Times have changed so has my truck. I think my overall look and clearance from the 33's will be great, yeah 35's are way pushin it , unless they only measured like 31" from Trailblazer or Baja claws LOL.

35's pushing it?! You've got 8.5 inches of lift; I would think that you could fit 35's with no trouble at all; especially since there are guys with 33's under only 4" of lift (fenderguy used to). But the Explorers seem pretty random about what will fit and what won't. I'd go to a tire store and see if you could try a 35 on to see if they rub. Mount 'em and try to move the suspension/steering through full range of motion. I'm no expert, but my rednecked opinion is that they should come really close to fitting. Good luck.

If you've got 8.5" of lift, I would think 35s would fit without a problem. Especially on the late model like we have. I've got them on with only 4" of lift. I did cut and bang stuff around but i don't rub anywhere except the inner well in the rear. Like BislamJoe said I had 33s with my lift and no fenders and minor banging to the firewall, and no cuttin in the rear. I have BFG Mudders and I measured them to the MTR (which I think is a great tire, and yes $155 is a great deal!) and my tires were larger by maybe 0.3" Anyway, you should have no problem fitting them.

Here is mine 4" lift with 35s, fiberglass fenders and Bushwacker flares

Good luck

Mileage

Guys with Goodyear MTR's, how many miles do you have on them and how much tread is left?

Anyone have experience them in snow? Hard packed or powder.

Thanks

well click on my registry to see what I am talking about, yeah 35's would be cool, but 33's make a lot more sense, no stress on motor, gears, brakes, travel, height. The only reason I am this tall is that I did the body lift first, and I like how it sits, I will not lower it, and may someday run 35's but for now I think 33 will do it. For what it's worth, click on my sig. I have 32's that measure a measly 30" right now on there and everyone says that my truck looks sweet, a 33 MTR will be a big step to take and then we will go from there!!!!!! I know it sounds crazy that it doesnt look stupid but for now due to financial reasons, I will not be tricking her out with bumpers and rock guards, and still take it out and give her the royal treatment off road and she handles a lot more than you would expect.
Colin
Do all those fiber fenders flare out that much or can you get less extreme?

i think rick has custom made 37 inch mtrs.... i saw tdavis's navajo in action with them and it was beautiful..... yeah.. 155 is a good price for that size {35} a 31 inch bfg all terrain ta ko is 110.....

Your still a sissy ..... with a bent ass running board! Danny why dont you come down the weekend of SEPT 21-23 and go to INDY with me! I will drive! yeah sounds like a plan right!~

Dannyboy -
I know they make a 3" pull for the Ranger which is the same as stock, but it's cut higher. I don't think anyone makes these for the Explorer. I haven't heard of anyone having that mold. You could call Perry's Fab and see if they have those but i don't think so.

About the stress thing, everyone is trying to find a way to make the Dana 35 stronger. The only problems I've heard that people have had is when their ARB locker blows up inside there. I beat the crap out of mine with the 35s on it on and off-road and I'm not worried at all. I say just stay away from ARB in the front. I'll probably get my ass chewed for that one but, every run I've been on with this group, at least one ARB goes out every time. Whether is be the locker itself or even just the compressor. I've got the Detroit Trac Loc limited slip up front with the detroit in the rear, and I make it anywhere I want to go. I have 4.56 gears also. I agree witht the stress on the brakes, and the engine, but my engine should blow up soon anyway the way I drive it. I'm ready to put the 302 in it. The height thing depends on what you have for instance; I have 35s that measure 34.5" and I'm lower than you with 32s that measure 30". Anyway... go for the 33s it will look good no matter what, it's a lifted Explorer!! good luck with everything else!

Rick has 35s
