Also, FYI, you CAN add an extended warranty as long as you do it while it's still under bumper-to-bumper, so if you start feeling like there are problems coming for whatever reason you can add it as long as you're still under the original warranty.

This is the only reason I'd add an ESP, and it is a good one. If while under the 3-year bumper-to-bumper you got a bad vehicle with problems, you can still get the ESP. If it has been clean - or pretty clean, my personal take is not to bother.

The dealer asks for 4505$CAN for 3 extra years. (PremiumCARE) Not thinking it is worthy.
3500 for 2 extra years

I have a 2015 sport, my current warranty ends in September 2018 (this year).
Brought it to the dealer for 2 recall and had a handful of things to check, like passenger seat was not heating/cooling
They also did a repair on the defrosted on the rear windows (even if they pointed out it was caused by a scratch!)
Also have false positive warning on my bumper sensor when it is snowy in traffic jam. They changed the cable bundle.

Im finally finishing the purchase of a 2016 XLT tomorrow at Carmax. I’m purchasing the vehicle from Carmax for about 28k with 35500 miles on it. The powertrain warranty should be good up until 60k as I understand but the bumper to bumper will expire by next week. Carmax offers a full warranty for the first 30 days you own the vehicle, along with their own “max care” extended warranty. The extended warranty is about $1800 and covers the vehicle bumper to bumper up to 100k.

Are there any other extended warranty company’s I should look at or is this a good deal?

I plan to call the local Ford dealership and see how much it would cost to have the oil changed and vehicle fully inspected either way. I did not get to see the vehicle cold as it was running before I picked it up for a test drive but after reading on here for a while leading up to this I paid close attention to the coolant level. With the vehicle already warm the level in the reservoir was about 3” below the cold fill range. Last thing I want is a problem with the water pump right away. Oil looked clean but also pretty new, so it’s not helpful to see if it’s leaking into it.

This is our first “nice” car purchase so I’m both excited and nervous.

V6 XLT with leather, towing, panoramic sunroof, and other fancy things I’ve never had before.

Call Ford, find out when the in service date is.. if it is beyond 3 years, then pricing changes a bit. I paid under $1800 for a Ford Premium ESP for 6yr/125k. I can give you Joels # who sells them at cost to forum members.

It may be worth having Ford look at the coolant level before you buy... It should not be that low at 35k... they can pressure test and see if it is leaking

But I know that depends on the person because they have let me previously go on a test drive without them. They do however have a 7 day return policy that I could go through if ford finds a problem CarMax won’t fix.

If you purchase this car and are planning to keep it a long time a Ford ESP Warranty is a must, there are just too many expensive components that can fail. Sure, not all Explorers are troublesome, but...
After all the repairs my car has needed in the first 3 years and 28k miles I'm glad I have ESP now that the B2B warranty is off.

I purchased a 6Y/100K, before I expired manifacturer one, thru the contact on this forum.
I'd say go for it, cost me around 3K Canadian pesos, but pretty sure I'll use it, don't know just feeling it...
As Explat says: so many expensive thing that can go wrong, 3K should be cheaper, well kind of hope?

For me personally, I would never buy a warranty from carmax, but that is because I would never buy a vehicle from them either. Make sure you review the carfax and any other vehicle history info you can get. Make sure you look at comps in your area also. Ford dealers have access to better priced auction vehicles than non-ford dealers. I would think you should be able to get a comparable vehicle for less from the used lot of a Ford/Lincoln dealer than a carmax.

With that said, there have been a few bloggers that have written extensively on their purchases of vehicles from carmax and the carmax warranty and they have generally been positive and without much issue/fanfare. You would need to look at the costs/coverage/rules and determine which is better for you.

Just know that everything with extended warranties is variable. Some people have really good experiences and some don't. There does not seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. If you go into it with reasonable or low expectations, you'll probably be okay to pleased more often than not. If you have high expectations, you may find yourself let down more often than not.

I'd say you must!!!

If an extended warranty is put on after the 36k it will cost quite a bit more since the vehicle will be classified as a 'used vehicle'.

As said by Peter, if original ESP is expired, it goes under the used car warranty, that is another ball game! Much less coverage.
If original is not expired, it is "an extension", much better coverage!!!
