When I want to check the compatibility of parts between cars I pretend to shop for the part for both models or years of the car, and see if the part number matches.

i think the parts are the same except for the calibration code.
No they are not. 2 O2 sensors vs 1, EGR went into some later productions of the 93 that the 91 doesn't have, and the pulse width modulation for the injectors are different between 91 and 93. That's not even talking about getting one that's a manual for an auto and visa versa. These are just a few of the things I know are different, there may be more.

thus is my dilemma i was given the 1991 eddie Bauer without the brain box so i am trying to find the proper one. i am going over to the truck today to try to see if it had any more stickers with calibration codes. the truck is an automatic, no egr, not sure about the rest. right now there is a bunch of snow on the ground. damn snowstorms.

For 91 use a 91 auto ECM and you should be fine. Make sure it is from 91 with what should be just one 02 sensor.

Like I said above.

Anyway, you may be able to get away with a 92 PCM. 92-93 was the crossover year for changes in first gens.

An ecm from a 90-91 ranger will work.

Both the ranger and explorer ecm work in my aerostar, I have a 91 auto ecm F17F-12A650-ABA I pulled from my aerostar when I did a manual trans swap. If it will work for you, you can have it for the cost of shipping.

Don't know why a Ranger ECM wouldn't work. The ECM is pretty simple on these things. As long as its out of a 4.0 automatic ranger it should work. Remember the ECM ONLY controls the engine, 3-4 shift and TCC lockup. It does not care about the ABS, transfer case, or anything on the body. As long as all the inputs and outputs are the same, it does not matter. And as far as I am aware the 4.0 and A4LD in the Ranger is the same as an Explorer, thus the term RBV ;)

i tried calling the ford dealer and they just told me to bring the old one in, even after i explained i don't have the old one.he told me i was basically screwed.

got the original back.the previous owner tried it in a 95 and it didn't work.

I'm assuming a 95 ranger? Either in an Explorer or Ranger the plug wouldn't have even matched up since 95 is an OBD1.5 so I don't know how he could have tried it. It would have to be a 94 and under for a first gen ECM to work.
