Is this car worth 4 grand?

If it's a V8 and in good shape, AND was taken care of that motor could well last another 100,000 miles. The problem is you have no idea if it uses oil or how it was cared for.

Mine had 150,000 on it when I bought it, but then I only paid 500, but the motor feels real strong and it's only used a little under a 1/4 of a quart of oil in 2800 miles.

The fact a dealer has it and has all these tid bits about 72 point inspections and the such would make me run. I can't stand dealers and will never, ever buy a vehicle again from one. I learned my lesson. What does the carfax say regarding it? If the dealer says he didn't run a carfax report you know he's lying and you better run.

Lucas Oil Stabilizer would cure that little bit of oil usage I bet :)

I don't mean to change the subject, but checkout this article before you buy into the idea of miracle additives.

Yeah, had seen that before... interesting read, but I take it with a grain of salt. I used Lucas Oil Stabilizer in the past because our truck would use about 1 qt of oil every 3,000 miles... since using Lucas, it wouldn't use a single drop. Loved that stuff :)

Is Lucas oil stabilizer cheaper than just adding another guart of motor oil.every 3K miles ?

Nope, it's a couple bucks more expensive. But, I wouldn't have to worry about using oil anymore which was fine for me.

A cheaper solution is to go from a 5W30 to 10W30 motor oil. All the Lucas really does is increase viscosity.

Was running 10W30

Then go 15W40.

lol too late now, motor was rebuilt... though I do wish the other issue would miraculously fix itself. /sigh.

Oh well, back to the original topic :)

OP: I'm curious, did you ever find out if the truck was a V8 or a V6?

The V8 motors and transmissions are far superior to the V6 ones.

Not yet, i was gonna go back this week and drive it again, but i'm contemplating just moving on and looking for one with less mileage. Too bad because its a damn fine looking truck.

There are a lot of us on this board with high-milage V8s, they are reliable engines when taken care of so I wouldn't let that scare you. I bought my truck with 105k on the clock, and no previous owner records from a shady used car lot, for 6 grand - back in 2002!!

If you do go back and you're skeptical of the truck, then you're in a great spot. You can just walk away. So you have nothing to loose by giving the guy a really really low offer: if he rejects it, you've lost nothing, but maybe he'll be in the mood for a quick sale (no financing) and just wants the truck gone, and you've snagged a deal!

keep in mind some high miles trucks are not that all bad. the trick is who owned them and how much put in them. i once bought a truck from a guy who had lots of money to spend and replaced dam near everything in it and spend mega bucks only to see a new model he wanted and sold it to me for next to nothing. i drove away with a 165,000 mile truck that was almost rebuilt inculeding a $2,000 trans and gear box that was new, new front upper and lower ball joints all new front end parts even had new exhust cats, tires brakes ect. and a motor with oil in it that looked brand new clean. all for 1,500 and the body and paint looked like new and the inside also. drove it for over a year 25,000 mile trouble free and sold it for 1,500 for what i paid for it.

Assuming everything on the truck is in good condition mechanically, what would you consider "snagging a deal?" $3000? $2500?

I'm trying to decide what to offer him if I decide to get it. I don't want to lowball him too hard. You think $2500 would be a good offer?

offer him 1500, if he balks.. walk out. If he has your phone number, he will call you in a week if it doesnt sell otherwise.

I'll offer him that, I doubt he'll take it though. Its been 2 weeks since I test drove it and I know he still hasn't sold it, he's reposted it on craigslist several times and hasn't lowered the price one penny. I've noticed other cars that I see on craigslist that get reposted will come down in price a couple hundred dollars a week when the owner or dealership starts to get desperate.

If I gave him 2000 for it I would have about 1500 to use on repairs or new parts if I needed anything replaced.

I'll take it to a mechanic and see what he thinks

What ever happened to the Limited in CA? That looked like a nice one for the money and it was a V8...

Person is being really shady about emailing me back. They emailed me back right away after I first inquired about it, then they went like 6 days without responding to me. Still don't know if its a 4WD or AWD, or V8 or any other details. If they ever email me back i'm still really interested in it

Here's another limited in CA. 132k miles, asking 4300 (says she would go as low as 3800... way to show your hand haha).

I don't like the color (slate green), or the fact that she says the paint is slightly oxidized. How much would a new paint job cost?

I also don't like that she just posted what looks like stock photos instead of pictures of the actual vehicle
