Bob, I had an antifreeze leak in my l993 XLT with l70,000 miles. It was coming from the lower intake maniforl, but the bad part was the intake had pitted. Had to buy a new manifold. I just let Ford do it for about 300 bucks. Good luck, I hope it is just the gasket. J. Norwood

Also, note in the red circle, you can see a stream of water coming out the leak in the gasket!
I poured some water into the radiator to see if I could comfirm the leak location. Yup, that's the spot! Engine's not running, that's just gravity shooting that stream out.

Looks like we got her all patched up. Had a little hang-up getting the EGR bolted back on, but we got it.

Sorry, no pics were taken. Replaced upper & lower intake gaskets and valve cover gaskets.

BIG thanks to Bob for driving up and helping me out!
For the record, I used an aluminum and rubber lower intake gasket from Ford, which was the 'new and improved' version over the one that came in my 93.
I bought Felpro perma-dry valve cover gaskets, which came with an upper intake gasket.
During reassembly, the EGR valve did not want to line up right, and the threads seemed to have gotten messed up, so we took a drive down to Harbor Freight and bought a metric tap and die set to clean out those holes.
After that, everything went fast and smooth, we had it together and driving before dark.

Bob, half an hour after you left, it started raining real good.

Question about the intake itself...

When you pulled the lower intake out how dirty was the underside of it? I pulled mine late Friday and the amount of dried hardened sludge is unbelieveable...I am using chemicals to dissolve and remove it and also parts brushing it off the manifold...

Also did the lower and/or upper intake have a layer of dark brown sludge in the ports as well?

ranger7ltr that looks about "par for the course" when we pulled apart our 93 it was really gunked up but about an hr of soaking in kerosene in my parts washer then a good scrubbin it was as good as new, kinda makes u think of those engine sludge commercials dosent it? lol

I was shocked to see how much buildup was in the ports. The ports in the heads were just as bad. Bob suggested I just run a can or two of Seafoam, rather than try to scrape it out.

Haha, I have a Macadamia nut tree in the yard, and a ground squirrel had been eating them under the hood. There were nut shells all between the upper and lower manifolds.
Luckily, he did not develop a taste for wires or hoses.

I am finding the same buildup in my ports in the lower and the plastic upper intake... I was not burning oil to my knowledge and the plugs and the tailpipe show a dry environment...I also found a really foul cylinder wall which will cause me to replace the shortblock...And this was present in the 14 months I drove this truck almost daily...It never overheated, it never misfired, it never showed a dead or weak hole but I cannot in good judgement put a new head onto this cylinder...
