Well, to be honest Sheri's Nissan started giving fits a couple weeks back, seems the alternator was going weak. However, while I was on the way to Orielly's I did go past my truck and saw him working on it.

Well, Sheri and I drove a 90 mile round trip for BBQ tonight.

New exhaust --changed the MAF back to stock and still only about 11 MPG

I need to get this figured out. This thing should be able to get 16-17 and I am about at my wits end.

The check engine light has not even flashed so I have no idea where to start looking for the culprit. I guess the coolant temp sensor ? air temp sensor?

Could it be something silly like the overdrive band being too tight?

The truck rolls nice and easy in neutral, it doesn't feel like anything is dragging.

Sparksaflyin;s truck has 36" tires and 456 gearing. It does get 17 mpg

this truck has 35" tires and 410 gearing. Something is awry because it can't seem to get out of it;s own way at anything over 60 mph. I doubt it would even hit 80.

Could it be the aerodynamics are altered that much without a top?

I don't think the gas mileage is that far off. That little motor is having to work a lot harder than the 347 to push you down the road, especially with 35's and 4.10's.

I edited my post. Sparksaflyins truck, as well as Burns both get 17 mpg or better.

And they have larger tires

What gear ratio are they pushing? If you have 4.10s on 35s, that is definitely out of spec - 33s already require 4.56s.

Sparkaflyin's is 456 geared. The engine speed at 65 mph is about 2200 RPM's

Mine with 410 gearing is about 2100 RPM's at 67 MPH. It will not hold that on an incline though, and often downshifts to 3000 RPM's if I try to hold 67 MPH.


Burns also has 36" tires-(maybe 37) and I thought he has 488 gears.

Yeah im running 488 with the new 37s (which weigh a ton) and i still average 15-17 depending on how it is driven.

33's with 4.10's is about 1800 rpms @ 62 for us.. and nets 15mph. 65mph or higher and the mpg goes into the tubes.

Thats with a motor with only around 30k miles on it.

My son says it has to do with the way the puter is programed for the fuel curve. I would also worry about the trans. Your working it hard pushing against those taller gears. Chad (Flip4ford) is just back from Colorado and made over 22 mpg average. But they highwayed at 60mph. He has 33's, 4.56's and an M5OD trans. Green will get about 20 maybe a bit more at 60mph and has 31's, 3.73's and a M5OD. To get the 22-24 mpg I need to be in OD at 1600 rpm about 50 mph.

My old 89 BII had 4.11's and 30" tires. It would avarage 20mpg on a trip to Utah or Colorado with the A4LD and 2.9. Jr. my 88 BII made 18mpg out to Green River Utah with 4.11's and 33's, with the C-5 and no OD at 65mph.

You have 5 on 5.5 wheel bolt pattern front and back? I have some 33's you could borrow to see it that helps. I have 31's but they are on rbv 5 on 4.5 wheels. With the 4.11 gears the 31's would get you an idea if thats the problem. I do have a set of 235's (28.?") on 5 onm 5.5 I use for daily driving my BII. Makes it look a little funny but it really zips and is easier to get in and out of.

How are you figuring mpg? Could you odometer be off a bit?

33" & 4.56 nets me around 19-21 mpg @ 65 mph. Any higher mph, the mpg will drop to 15 mpg.

I expect the mpg to drop with 35". This will be the case until the 5.13 ratio gets installed.

So.....Slow down for better mpg.....Re-gear to 5.13 to match your tires. These OHV rigs are tanks with little HP. Gearing is the ONLY thing that helps us.

513 gears would be way too low of a gear for 35" tires. The highway RPM's in OD would be around 2800 I reckon.

488 would be a possibilty. As stated, Sparksaflyin's truck gets great mileage with 36" tires and 456 gears. Our highway RPM's are within 100 RPM's of each other.

Burns has 37" tires and 488 gears.

After reading the 1st gen gas mileage thread, I see several trucks getting good economy around 17 MPG, and a group of "bad" economy around 11 MPG
There are all kinds of tire size gear combination's in there but nothing to make a connection from.

I still think it is a problem with the truck. It isn't running quite up to snuff.
