I have a 2000 Explorer 5.0 the other day as I accelerated onto the highway, my Explorer stumbled slightly and shut off, now electrically everything worked and still does the engine would crank it just would not start it was not overheating engine heat was normal oil pressure normal but it was hot outside about 93 when I open the hood I was overwhelmed by the amount of heat put off by the engine but again it was not overheating. Allowed to cool down a couple of hours fired right up drove home normally. Suspected coil packs no codes nothing else to report any clues?? Help

@MichelleMD

K.I.S.S. Principle = When was the last time it had a new fuel filter installed?

Pretty reasonable priced part @ $15 - 20 to establish a base line when starting diagnosis path.

Your mileage may vary ;)

Fuel pump

I agree, probably fuel pump. The brushes wear out in these puppies.
I once replaced one with only 60K miles, but they usually last about
150K miles. Past that, you're taking a chance on being stranded.

BTW, the black residue that's found in the inlet side of the fuel filters
is carbon from the worn pump brushes.

Okay after about 2 hours I fired it right back up acted normal and I continue to drive home about 30 plus miles. Still no codes, the next day I drove it about 3 miles just enough to warm it up completely and it did it again this time it only took about half an hour and it fired right back up like there was nothing going on so far mystery I will get into checking fuel pump tomorrow

I will also be checking the fuel pump relay because of underhood air temperatures they seem rather High

Good idea, much easier for me to do anyway.

My vote is a overheating worn out fuel pump and filter

any knocking? my 99 thermostat failed at about 50k fuel pump at 110.00
but it was throwing code and i foolishly did not have it checked went in store only 4 mi from home would not start. fuel pump would happen with full tank of gas . but also check the radiator get warm and then check for cooler spots and see if gauge or temp sender is good

Sorry for the delay, but the problem is finally fixed!!!! After several months of trying to figure out what I was missing, and replacing the fuel pump, coils, and spark plugs and wires. I decided to look at the MAF.....?..bingo it had several small pieces of leaves in the hot wires, cleaned and now running the best it ever has..thank God. That will teach me to neglect the basics lol merry Christmas everyone and thanks again for the help.

^^^^^^ Now that PIC is worth 1,000 words - Thanks for posting it @MichelleMD

Your Ex should run like a fine tuned machine with all the new parts

FYI when I put my fuel pressure gauge on it, it read 60/59 psi at idle. But it didn't hold that very long, bleed off rapidly to nothing in less than 30 min. Needless to say replacement was a good idea and not wasted $$$$

Not familiar with 5.0 air intake setup but I'm guessing things weren't sealed up good to allow those leaves inside / past air filter etc...

I found that the air filter element had a slight gap on the side where it was supposed to sit, corrected that problem....

Thanks for posting your update. I would have never suggested looking there, so I think you deserve bonus points. I marked the thread title with solved as to help others in their search.

Thank you that's a high compliment coming from you , just glad the problem is over.!!!!

Well I spoke to soon, today I was driving back from town and it shut off again. No warning no codes. So at home I pulled the air filter and this is what I found. Cleaned it out and runs fine again.
