Has anyone installed one of these on their 98+ Explorers yet?? I got my Performance Products catalog today and was pumped to see that they are in their now. I would like to hear about the performance gains/etc. compared to KKM. Thanks.

I did not see the Gen II available for late model Explorers on the K&N website.

Wonder why?

Maybe this will help.. By the way, in the catalog they don't even have a price for it yet, it says please call.

There are no prices listed as of yet, so apparently this thing is brand new and Performance just got it in their catalog in time. Actually I just looked on the website and they don't even have it on there nor when I do a reference number search does it appear. I know my eyes are not deceiving me, though.

is that for the OHV or the SOHC?

oh cool! i've waited so long for these k&n fipks to come out for the soch engine. can't wait to see the catalog. i know a couple of people here have installed 97 fipks on their 98+, but i'm not sure how it worked out for them. perfect timing too, as i think it's about time to clean the MAF.

I would bet the kit is either for the OHV v6 or a mistake. I'm putting my money on the latter, especially since I recently received a reply from K&N saying that they expect their SOHC kit to be released sometime during Q1 2002. Volant Performance has been promising "next week" for 5 months now.

I would bet it is for a OHV. I highly doubt it is a mistake considering it says call for prices so obviously it is brand spanking new.

Here the SOHC kits

I've been selling these custom kits for the last year. Cheaper then K&N, Volant, and with the same quality.

Hey Sport (no trac),

The Volant kit is now available. I saw it on their website last night and have also seen it on ExplorerUnderground.com (I know, get a life and stop surfing Explorer sites!)

I dig the box for the intake. Now if they'd only make one for the OHV I'd be happy. Oh well, gotta make my own I guess. At least it'll be cheaper.

YetiX:

Where did you see it on the Volant site? I check it every couple of days (and just re-looked) and I didn't see anything for the SOHC X. They have a Ranger kit, but nothing for the X.

I did see a prototype kit at Explorer Underground, looks very cool.

Ben, is your kit CARB approved? The Volant and K&N kits will be, there is where the price difference is. I would rather pay a bit more than have to take my intake off when I need to rush in for my last minute inspection.

When a catalog has "call for price" it often times is an indication that they didn't have the product in stock when the catalog went to the publisher. They were using a date they were given for when it "should" be available. If you call them they will probably tell you that it isn't available yet. Then again, maybe K&N finished early, yeah right! :)

It is a common practice in many industrues to "test market" a product that hasn't even been made yet to determine if there is actually a profitable market.

There is definitely a market for these. I have sold over 100 of my kits in the last 9 months. Everyone has been very pleased with them. Sport (no trac), no they are not CARB approved yet since they are custom made, not manufactured by a huge company like K&N. But I have yet to meet or hear of an inspector that has even taken a second look at these. They will pass, unless the inspector is an ass or you live in California. I am working on getting them CARB approved, but it is such a long drawn out process. The Volant kit is NOT out yet, they keep promising, but w/o delivery. I am trying to get one of their first kits so I can dyno their kit vs. mine (since there are some sceptics about the aluminum piping vs. the plastic), but will just have to wait on them. The one on Explorer Underground is just a prototype model. They used his truck to test out their prototype on, and it is the only one out there as of yet.

Robert:

How did you get a FIPK to work with your SOHC? Is the filter isolated from underhood air or is it the old KKM style open element ?

you guys can try the K&N FPIK that explorer express.com offers. I've had it since this summer and I love it!

Volant Cool Air kits (Volant part number #19640) are now available per an email I received from them today. I don't see them on there web site yet but I should receive mine in a few days. It wasn't cheap but not much more then a K&N setup plus you replace the housing all the way to the throttle body. With shipping it was a little under 300 bucks. I'll let you know what I think once I get it.

Syd:

Where did you buy the Volant from? Does it come with the clear panel over the air filter?

Tell me about this exhaust. How does the Flowmaster sound? Did you have a complete system custom fabbed or did you have the Flowmonster installed into the stock system?
