nice write-up studd469, thanks, do you know what the brightness rating (mcd) of the leds are?

The 5mm wide angle bubls that I put inside my keypad are 350mcd.
I tried a 3mm LED that was 2000mcd but it wasn't as bright.

I'm in

Anti Commmander that sounds like a very nice offer. I'll take 2. I can't solder.

What is the info on the resistor? I have to do our's because the bulb has not worked for quite a while.

depending on the voltage of the LED, it can vary, mine are 3.3 to 3.5 volts and the supplied resistors are 470 ohms.

You can also buy the Neo - Wedge LED Instrument Panel Bulbs Type-C from here.

http://autolumination.com/74.htm

They are about the size of a 5mm bulb but have a tiny resistor built into the base, makes wiring a ton easier. All you have to do is unwrap the legs of the LED from the plastic base that is comes in and presto your done.

The cleaner install is worth the extra cost if you ask me....

That looks cool, I may have to brave it and see if I can do it right. :) And check out the window switches.

for those of you that dont have the led factory style you might need to put a resistor on the black wire that is located in the middle . I otherwise i would have led last for like 2 seconds before the juice killed it. just thought i might save some people some time and clarify.

Thanks, 5.0 Power...Good "heads up".

Wow, I have never seen this thread before. On my 99 keypad, I changed the leds out to blue also. Although there are 5 led's instead of one, so it is still a much easier project because you avoid the silicone mess.

I used PLCC-2 Surface mount LEDs from ebay. I had them lying around from when I swapped the leds out that were inside my steering wheel controls (higher end ones with the radio controls)

Great write up, I may look into doing this, Id like to change my color from green to blue.

just make sure you use at least 4-5 thousand mcd led's if you have the one that requires the silicoln. Anything less that you would find at radioshack or and story like that doesn't even come close to lighting it up.

wait are those supposed to light up before the mod? cuz mine never light up...EVER!!!!!!!!! oh well a good excuse to do the mod now!

Well seeing as how your truck is 12 years old, I'd say that light bulb has outlived it's life.

I'm going to hit up a junkyard and get a spare one to experiment on. That way if I break something I'll only be out no more than $10. Who knows what Ford would charge for a new one these puppies.

Anyone for hire to change ones for me?

My keypad is broken, but once i pull one out of a junkyard or something, that would be awesome if anyone wanted to change mine to blue

Or if someone wanted to sell me a Blue lighted keypad to replace my broken one, id pay nicely

adamwarner... Anitcommander said he would do it in a previous post. PM him.

I imagine it wouldn't be any different on the 3rd gen xplorer/mounty? The blue looks awesome!

But the 3rd gen has them on the door pillar instead of the door itself. I assume the removal process is different, but actually changing the LED's is the same?

-Melon

Yeah I'm not sure on removal perhaps easier? I was speaking more about the lights I'd imagine are bigger.

I'll have to get a picture of it.

The one I pulled out of an Explorer in the yard wasn't siliconed together. It was a 2 piece plastic assembly that snapped together. Secondly, there wasn't a lightbulb and fiber but 5 individual MINI LEDs soldered down to a board. Looked like this - http://www.ledtronics.com/ds/smd-1206/
