'03 Explorer XLT, Does anyone know where the knock sensor is located at and what purpose does it serve besides turning on the CEL.????

Thanks.

Not exactly sure where they are, but the knock sensors detect detonation in the motor and retard the timing to prevent the detonation from occuring.

what octane gas are you running?
what engine is in your 03

what code did the CEL give you?

From 91-99 Haynes:

"The knock sensor is used on the 4.0L SOHC V6 engine to detect engine detonation or pinging. The sensor produces a fluctating output voltage which increases with the severity of the knock. The signal goes to the PCM, which will retard ignition timing to stop the detonation. The knock sensor is located on the right cylinder head by the intake manifold."

Having said that, I recommend responding to 410's questions before changing things.
