Robert and I are doing a run at La Bajada, NM over the 4th of July weekend.

Since I read this:

Here is the last paragraph from Jack's article: "Taking a historic route is always interesting. Sometimes the wind of La Bajada sounds like the ghosts of all the people who have traveled the descent. It's just a four-wheelers bonus that, the old trail, with all it's obstacles, can still provide a great gateway into the past."

... I have been wanting to take the Dr. Jack on this trail, Robert is itching to do something with the Beast and La Bajada is a long weekend ideal spot.

Planning to Attend

Here is a recent trip report with pictures of this trail: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=312221

It is nothing too hard and takes about an hour to do with a small group. There are a few other trails in the area including a large, deep "blow hole" in the Earth and a few other interesting Forest Roads in the area. I would recommend minimum 31s and good off road tires.

For Lodging, Albuquerque is about 45 minutes South and Bernalillo is about 25 minutes away to the South as well. Santa Fe is about 25 minutes to the North. There is also a State Park, Cochiti Lake, that has a campground near the trailheads. (small lake for sailing, canoeing, etc.)

The Santa Fe National Forest will be going into Stage III Fire Restrictions this Friday. That means all of the surrounding areas of La Bajada that I thought I would show you guys around are now going to be off limits. That just leaves La Bajada trail (since it is State Lands I believe). That will only take up a half day so Im not sure what else to do while you guys are here. Alot of wheeling land is getting shut down due to fire restrictions.

From what I understand the trail will be run on July 3 is that correct? If so what's going on the first and second? Char and I are interested in attending. If we go we'll be staying at the KOA in Bernalillo that is as long as we can get reservation still.

There is a Burger King, Sonic and McD's in Bernalillo! :D

There is next to nothing around Cochiti for dinner that I am aware of. The options are going to be Santa Fe which is North of where everyone is staying or Bernalillo. For food in Bernalillo see here: http://www.urbanspoon.com/n/60/6001/Albuquerque/Bernalillo-restaurants

I have never eaten in Bernalillo but I can offer suggestions off that list for our group. The Range Cafe is good. The Santa Ana Casino should also be good, we could go to their buffet or grill. The buffet might be better that way we can take our time and everyone can eat what they want. http://www.santaanastar.com/restaurants-lounges

There is also Albuquerque and Rio Rancho but that is out of the way for everyone. A group dinner in Bernalillo will be our best bet.
