Liftgate window shattered

I really doubt that’s the case. And, if it’s actually the case, just sound convincing and plod on. Denial isn’t just a river in Egypt.

In the immortal words of one of my instructors, "if you can't dazzle them with you skills, just mesmerize them with your bullshit".

A covered repair AND a box of donuts would have been a happier ending.
Even happier

Seems like a good as reason as any to NOT USE auto settings for climate control, especially in cold weather. If there is a dramatic temperature difference between outside of vehicle and inside that could cause it. Yes I know the glass is supposed to be tempered and designed to handle this type of scenario but obviously this one got by designers. There was a post on the Taurus Forum about the same type of scenario, went to hit rear defroster and....CRACK!!!! Although not a shatter I had a incident last year. Reason I didn't think of it until now was 1. It was a rental and 2. I wasn't on the forum at the time. I was driving to VA for my annual Wreaths Across America tour. Departing out of Columbus, OH after normal fuel stop I looked to my right for traffic scan and noticed a crack along the bottom edge of the passengers front window. Contacted my friend with computer access and decided to do immediate return to Port Columbus Airport for trade out. Took a couple of hours for trade out but uneventful departure. I never heard any more on it, the only thing I can immediately think of is the extreme temperature differential (20F Outside and 70F Inside.) It wasn't sudden thermal shock because it wasn't the rear window defroster. Yes I know the glass is supposed to be designed for that but it happened. I would at minimum leave rear defroster OFF for the Auto Settings.

My 2016 XLT rear window just exploded earlier this afternoon today! It was cold, but no ice on my window. Clear, sunny sky too. I was sitting at a red light, didn’t even have the rear window defroster on and “BAM!” Like a shot, it was shattered from the central wiper out in a burst pattern. Scared the heck out of me. So add one more to this “known” problem and call the defect a defect!

Welcome to the Forum:wave:
Sorry to hear about your unpleasant experience.

Peter

So my Explorer was in getting the rust fixed on both read doors, (new skins), and I mentioned to my service advisor about my rear window. Known problem at that dealer. They have done a lot of replacements on Explorers and Edges. And that windshield warranty is 1 year, but all other glass is 3 years, and Ford will pay if done through the dealer.

It is. The service tech said there is a notice through the 2018 model year. If you search online, you will also see this has been going on for years across several makes and models.
All quality issues don’t automatically result in recalls right away. My Lincoln MKX was 10 yrs old when we got the recall notice for the Takata issue.
I’m not trying to be argumentative, but your response is an uneducated opinion and doesn’t change the facts of my personal experience.
Ford Motor Co agreed to cover the cost of the repair—happy ending.

How did you get them to pay for it?? Tail gate glass imploded on my way to work this morning (defroster was NOT turned on). The dealership (Discovery Ford, Burlington) said my vehicle is off warranty so it's not covered...

Just so everyone knows the dealership is charging me $975 plus HST

I’d call a glass place. After a warranty is up my car would never see the dealer again. $$$
Satellite would come to you and do it for about $400.

I think mine started in about the same place actually... 2017 Limited

Did you mean Safelite?

Did you check with your insurance company? Check out the prices (U.S.) here;AutoNation Ford White Bear Lake | Parts & Accessories

Peter
Hi Peter. I did check with my insurance company, but when factoring my deductible and the timing of my repair I just had the dealer go ahead. I can't manage without my vehicle :( I've already accepted the fact that I'm out the money, it's just really annoying that this has happened. I've never had this happen to me before and I hope it doesn't happen to anyone else.

Edit: Thanks for the link.. I believe the part price they quoted was in the neighbourhood of $550 (CAD). There were a couple of other charges but the other big one was $375 labour which included cleaning up all the glass from inside the panel.

My dealership wouldn’t pay for the replacement. Luckily I pulled off to the side and called the police. They would not let me continue driving as it was a hazard! Glass falling everywhere when it bumped, so I had to call for a tow. Dealers charged $671, and my auto insurance paid for everything except my deductible. I was told that the auto glass companies can’t do these because the rear wiper and mechanics are in/through the window itself.

Yes, I meant Safelite. Auto glass places surely can do these. Very common for wiper mechanicals to go through the rear glass.

Why would you call the police after a window broke?

I had not heard of these spontaneous explosions/implosions of rear windows. I had thought someone had shot my window. It was quite a scare.

Happened to me just today with my 2017 Explorer XLT, car was parked in garage over night, not running. So no rear defrost on, and not opening any lift gate. Car hadn't been running since night before, garage had been open for 20 mins with morning sun on the back window. I walked by and bang (right next my ear, scared the crap out of me, sounds like a gun shot), shattered all around the edges and through out the whole panel. Called Ford, they took it in, covering it under warranty, including my rental for the next 3 days until the part arrives.

Wow, this is shocking guys, this is the first time I have come across this problem you all have reported.

There's a thread on the expedition forum about 4th gens doing exact same thing. Makes me wonder if Ford's supplier is sending them sub par quality product.
