Yes! HIR bulbs are only available in 9005 & 9006.
NOT 9007 or 9004 that older Explorers use.
This is a bulb upgrade ONLY for the Explorers that use seperate bulbs for high and low beams.

What exactly are you guys asking for at JD? 9012's?

OYE! How did I miss that!!!Thanks!

JD wants $25.49 for them now and they are different bulbs from what I gather on other boards.

An update on an old thread. I just bought 2 of these bulbs from my local parts house and I paid $6.49 each. The package says Selectro 9012, but it's a Philips bulb inside. That is a wholesale price. The list price is $13.50 each. Well worth the money. $13.00 for the pair!

Another thing to add to an old thread, you second gen guys could look into the ebay dual projector housings if you want to go with the 9005/9006 bulbs btw. Just something to remember. I used to use these bulbs in my contour, they are stupid bright, and since the source is basically in the same position as a stock bulb, the lighting off them is not that bad.... not like using HID retrofit bulbs. The intensity is a bit higher, so don't be surprised if there are a few artifacts in your beam pattern, but in my experience, it wasn't that bad.

If you can get the Philips HIR's for $6.49 each, you should buy as many as you can get. I'm sure you could sell them for a hefty profit too, since they are apparently no longer produced, at least not by Philips.

It's really too bad these never made it to other bases, I'd like to see what they do for 9004s and H4s.

Philips still makes the bulb. I am a Ford Parts Manager and I have them in stock. It's the headlight bulb for a 2011 Edge. The Ford price on them is $62.65 each. It's the same bulb, made by Philips.

Diggin' up an old thread here...

I actually found this thread while Googling for information on lighting upgrades for my '04 Jeep Grand Cherokee. (Well, re-found... I remember when Nate first started it years ago, but my '99 Explorer and '98 Mounty had 9007's and didn't offer me the ability to take advantage of this mod).

Luckily for me, WJ's have a dual beam headlights, with 9005/9006 for hi/lo. Friday I bought qty: 2, AH211917 from John Deere and did the required modifications to fit them into my headlight housings. Interesting to note, my bulbs are Toshiba HIR2's. I thought these were discontinued in '09, so maybe Toshiba started making them again or JD has lots of stock.

The extra light output is a great. Well worth the upgrade!

Someone mentioned JD hiked their price when people started buying them for their cars.

They are now $28/ea tax at John Deere dealerships.

Also, while I was upgrading the bulbs, I took the time to try a 3M Headlight Restoration kit. This kit is phenominal. I picked it because it is a 4 step process that requires you to chuck the sanding/buffing/polishing pad into your cordless drill. My WJ's headlights were quite oxidated and road rashed (and I had tried to wet sand them by hand 2 years ago). Compared to the other kits on the market, this kit is quite aggresive, with 3 steps of abrasives (500, 800, 3000 grit) and final liquid polishing compound. Also, by using a cordless drill you can get considerably more sanding/buffing, with A LOT less work! :D:cool:

Here are some before/after pics of the 3M headlight resto on the driver's headlight. The difference is quite remarkable. (The after pics include the new, 9012 HIR bulbs). :chug::biggthump

EDIT: PS, don't take your headlights off like I did to do the 3M resto. Its a PITA. I did the passenger's headlight today with it mounted on the Jeep and it was significantly easier!

The headlights look a lot better. I need to do that to mine.

I am very impressed with the 3M kit. I took my time and used up every last bit of grit on the 500 & 800 sanding pads and then smoothed and polished several times. They say it can be done in 30 min, but I probably spent at least an hour on each head light. Reading more, it looks like I need to buy some UV protectant ('headlamp sunscreen'), so I'll pick that up today.

I made the mistake of sending the before/after pics to my dad and girlfriend... Apparently I have accidentally signed myself up for quite a headlamp resto's...;)
