'93 Explorer 4.0 auto, 128K miles:

In the process of getting at something else, I pulled the intake hose off the intake, and noticed a small amount of oil sitting at the bottom of the "butterfly" valve, just inside the intake's mouth.

Is that from the PCV system? Anything to be concerned about?

P.S. The engine burns/leaks about 1 quart of Mobil 1 between 10,000-mile changes. I change the Mobil 1 filter at 5,000.

back to life

i have found the same thing on my sport(mine does not leak anything) while looking into the swiss cheese mod. i have searched on the subject and my case is less severe than most. it is a tiny amount sitting just before the maf sensor, also the hose that comes from the intake tube to the engine there is a tiny bit of oil around where the hose fits up. just need to know if thats normal or leading to a bigger prob and i should go buy some more tools:D:(

It is normal to have that little bit of oil flow through the breather tube and into the intake as it is suppose to help lube the upper valves, problem is if to much is present or on older high mileage vehicles, it can cause black internal crapola in the engine thus causing a carboned up vehicle, thus causing more issues.

I have not done the seperator mod as mine does not put that much into the intake yet.

adding a seperator wouldnt hurt, right? i have 137k, but in 1 swipe of my finger 80-90% of the oil was gone. on a second look it seemed as if a small amount of oil had seeped(spel?)onto the top lip of the air box by the clips from where the plastic and metal meet also a little bit was around the breather hose on the engine-thinking on getting a hose clamp for that. from your post i think i should go ahead and find a seperator, unless you all believe it isnt crucial, but it will still be on the "LIST"---damn the "LIST" keeps getting longer and longer:D--at least most of it has been fun stuff/mods
kinda off subject- any feedback on which is better the swiss cheese or the dryer hose mod or both?
