I got in my Explorer (Cold. Not driven or started today). I turned the key to start and A LOUD BANG!. It came from the rear and it felt like the rear end was lifted with the bang. I mean it was loud.
After that, the Explorer won't start. No Clicking or sounding like it wants to start.
After the Bang, I thought it was the differential or trans or both. But that can't be it. I wasn't moving and I was in Park in my driveway.
I can't find anything about a LOUD BANG when trying to start and in park.
HELP!!!!

Well, it sounds like something broke.

Gonna need more information if you really want some help. Did you even pop the hood open and look for, you know, broken stuff?

Could have been a loud backfire. They can definitely be very loud and startling.

The only thing that comes to mind is that you had excess raw fuel in the exhaust system and when you went to start, it ignited.

A bad fuel pressure regulator could cause a condition like that or perhaps a stuck injector. Not sure about the no crank issue since the bang though.

I've had batteries explode, when they do it sounds like a cannon going off under a bridge. It obviously wouldn't sound like it came from the rear of the car though.

I'll definitely check in the morning and get back to you

I do forget things lately. Maybe.

Disconnect battery, wait a few minutes, reconnect and try again.

Old trick back in the day to scare people, potato or banana shoved into tailpipe, clogging it, will cause a huge backfire. You might have been pranked.

I think this thread could end up full of conspiracy theories. Disconnecting the battery is a good idea, it's voltage should be checked too, that might explain the lack of power.

I've checked under the hood and elsewhere. Don't see anything broken. No codes came up after a scan. I like to gamble so I tried starting the old girl. Bingo! It starts, though it took a few tries. It acted like the starter was bad. Now it starts every time. The engine started up rough but smoothed out pretty fast. Put in Reverse and backed up the driveway. Did the same in Drive. No problems. It seems that the trans and differential are OK.
It was said earlier it might have been a backfire that caused the bang. I think it may have been.
Has anyone heard of a bad starter making a LOUD BANG?

I do believe you may be correct. Check Stynx's reply.

Previously you said when you tried to start it there was no clicking or anything. Did the power in the vehicle come on when you turned the key? I'm guessing yes since it has since started. One off problems are the hardest to diagnose.

To everyone that replied , thank you. I drove the Explorer with no problems. I do believe it was a backfire as suggested. Thanks again for everyone’s input.
