Any body running a larger MAF and or spacer? If so, what kind of performance did you gain? Is it worth the money and if so, where to buy? Thanks!

Yes. It is worth it, every penny.
I have a Granatelli 70 mm MAS meter.
It works flawlessly.
Really finished off my intake and made the 4.0L OHV really wake up, especially at higher RPM's and up here in the Rockies.

Of course your intake and exhaust is only as good as your smallest bottleneck, so without the rest of the package only marginal gains will be seen.

I would start with the airbox, then the MAS, then headers give you the biggest bang for the buck.

how much does it cost to have the headers put on?

It cost me $1100 to get the coated JBAs and have them installed.

What do you mean spacer? I have never seen these.

And leenjen, don't have your headers installed. I'm sure ou would be able to do it. The price of labor is way to much to spend if you don't have to.

Spacers are used between the throttle body (or carb) and the intake plenum, there are not mas air spacers.

And I would have done the headers myself, but was in the middle of final exams when I got them and didn't have the time.

how much would it cost to buy headers and install them yourself? is it a hard install?

check out www.truckperformance.com for the JBAs. They're a very good retailer, I've been very happy with them and they usually have good prices. Also, if you order by phone sometimes they'll give you a little lower price than the website.

Honestly, the install is a real PITA (pain in the arse). The header bolts are very hard to get to. The seal between the header and the heads takes patience and a little skill and know-how to get trouble free, and a little improvising is often necessary in terms of the connections to the Ypipe and collector extender.

It is definately a job for a more experienced and very patient wrenchead.

i installed header on my big dodge and that was fairly easy. o nthe explorer would be a bit challenging i imagine. if you had the time and some patience i cant see it taking more than a long saturday.

so does anyone have the spacer? the one i saw was Dead Link Removed. they seem to be for the sohc only but i might be wrong. look slike i need to do some homework.

It won't do you any good. I noticed you have a V8. The stock one in the V8 will pass more air then you ever need. One exception is if you had alot of mods, like ported heads, supercharger, TB, heads etc etc. Even then you wouldn't notice much of a difference.

im waiting to hear back fomr these guys on a spacer for the 4.0 and what kind of performance it will gain.

turbo city

spacers

the spacers were traditionally used in carburated applications to isolate the carb from the heat soak of the intake manifold as well as increase the size of the intake plenum.

On our advanced fuel injected applications, a TB spacer is useless. We don't need to isolate the TB from heat because it doesn't have the fuel flowing through it. We don't need larger plenums, because there is no fuel mixture atomizing in it.

Make sense?
good.

makes sense i guess. i still am waiting to hear what they claim the boosts will be.

Migger MAF

Anyone heard of a difference between the GMS 70mm MAF and the ProM 70mm MAF? Although I want one, the price tag on the GMS is scaring me off a litte when it seems like the ProM would be the exact same piece of equipment for $100 less.
Thanks for the input,
Karl

The ProM is the housing alone, it uses the stock sensor..The difference is the amount of airflow and the finished throat.

The GMS MAF made a huge diff in power.... Over all the Granatelli has got to be the best one out there!

58v8

Sunds like the Granatelli for me!!Hey 58v8, or any one else, after a bigger MAF, bigger TB, bigger exhaust, and a chip (to ber ordered this week) would you go for headers next?
What would improve performance the most? Looking for low end torque in a 98 Sport 4x2 since winter's coming.
Thanks,
Karl

Karl

The only big difference the heaers mde for me was in the upper RPM's and it makes an awsome sound... If your looking for low-end torque, also later on if you plan on getting a supercharger, explorerexpress recommends that you dont get the headers. Personally I would keep what you have and don't spend the extra cash. The other thing is the chip!... I had the chip in my truck (JET) then (HYPERTEC) and the thing ran like crap. Bad fuel milage, check engine light, no top end.... Then I took a trip up to FORD MOTOR SPORT. If you can find a nice enough guy like I did in the back he will customize a Ford factory chip for you! This chip does everthing all the others claim! This one raises your fuel economy! Raises your HP! and makes PASSING easier with a 4350lb sport utility!

mike, which one did you upgrade to?
