awhile back i put a 40 series flowmaster on my 4.0L '95 Explorer sport - Single in dual out, with hopes of getting that nice flowmaster sound. I was inspired by a co worker who has a little mazda pickup (around a '95 i believe) with flows, and the ####er sounds like a 5.0 V8!!!! I put the flows on my truck, it sounds a little beefier but still like a v6!!!

I asked the guys at the muffler shop why my car still sounds like a v6, and he said it was because of my cat's - SO MY QUESTION Is there any truth to this, and if so, what cat should i buy to get a beefy flowmaster sound out of my v6 in conjunction with the flows i already have installed. AND how much would that cost roughly for parts and install

put an intake on too? I dunno every engine sounds different though. I've never seen a V6 sound exactly like a V8-some have come close though. On my old 95 V6 I put a 40 flowie on it and it sounded good dont get me wrong, but it wasn't a V8!

But I do know there is typically a bunch of cats on the ex, maybe freer flowing ones? And a bigger diameter exhaust if yours is small... Some more experienced exhaust folks could probably help you more than I can.

It's not gonna happen. Do what you like, but youll never duplicate the sound. Maybe at idle but when you're on the gas, I dont care how much you spend, it's not gonna happen.

I have a 4.0L OHV, and it sounds as close to a 5.0L as you could get. I get questioned all the time about it.

I have a stock Cat, and a custom 3" catback with a Ravin (Midas' generic Flowmaster 'wannabe') muffler. It sounds AWESOME, and have noticed ZERO loss in torque as some have said I would. I think that is due to the catalytic converter still in place, still creating enough back pressure to have little/no loss there.

lol, say that all you want, but myself and others have witnessed many v6's with custom exhaust that sound so much like a v8 that we have to pop the hood to check. Such as the co worker with the mazda/ranger pickup. The tone and volume was virtually indistinguishible from my brother's '94 Chevy pickup equiped with a 350 and flowmasters

But i dont blame you for not believing, i wouldn't believe it either until i heard it for myself

any chance you might be able to get a soundclip of it?

It is extremely hard to get a v8 sound out of a v6. I plan on doing some headers - don't know how much change that will bring, but I will hopefully be able to tell you by this summer. Good luck on trying to get to your goal. And one thing, you'll never have the "spitting" that a v8 has. Like when the truck has duals and you can hear one pipe "spitting" differently than the other pipe. Yeah - yours will sound exactly the same until you get rid of that y-pipe which is extremely hard. Again, good luck.

I can get a sound clip of it, no problem. I just need a place to host it.

I think making a V6 sound like a stock V8 isn't difficult. Most of the V8 trucks and suvs I see don't make much noise at all. I think the typical "V8 sound" is from a V8 with a modified exhaust.

I've been asked if I have a V8.

Anyone who thinks their 6 sounds like an 8 needs to get their hearing checked. If you want it to sound like a v8 it's easy, follow these directions.

There are plenty of V6's that sound close to a V8. Read carefully. I said CLOSE, not exactly like. I know, because I have one. Flowmaster Original 40 with a single Magnaflow cat, and it sounds very similar to a V8. Have you heard husky's sound clip of his exhaust? Flowmaster Super 40 w/ no cats. Sounds really good and close to a V8. Of course there is the everpresent factor that with ANY V6, once you hit about 3k RPM under acceleration, you and everyone around you will know it's a V6. But as long as you keep it under that 3k mark, the right setup will fool plenty of people.

V6's can be made to sound good, really good. I've heard a 3.0 Ford and a 4.3 Chevy with Flowmasters and they sound great. But when you rev it up and get up around 4,000 rpms, they sound crappy still. You'll never make a V6 sound as good as a V8. Especially a 302, which when combined with a Flowmaster 40 series, is the sweetest car sound this side of a Ferrari V12.

I'm gonna agree with both arguements here :D Never gonna sound exactly like a V8, especially if they have duals on it. But with the right set-up you CAN have one :fire: MEAN :fire: sounding 4.0. Any good custom exhaust shop should be able to hook you up. I have a custom exhaust from the Y pipe back...hi-flow cat, flowmaster 40, all w/ 2 1/2" pipes that opens straight out the back via 3" chrome tail. Combined with the KKM intake it produces a very deep 'throaty' ...dare I say V8 sound ;) I get asked all the time..."hey man wat chu got under da hood". As far as sounded s#$tty above 4000rpms...Mine purrs like a kitten... even at WOT ! course don't think I've ever gone much above 4000, with my M5OD I'm only hittin about 3000 @ 75mph in 4th, and about 3300 @ 85-90mph in 5th....and she still purrs at that range!!!

Then that my friend is what i shall be installing soon =P

Can you possibly make me a sound clip and email it - NickCardoza@gmail.com
it would be greatly appreciated

I'd take a cam over a muffler anyday. That's where the exhaust gets it's sexual appeal from. :p

No toys capable of recording a soundclip. Guess you could call me on the cell and I could fire her up for ya :D ...lol...not sure how it will sound over a cell phone though ?

I'd love to add some ponies by throwing on cams....course if I'm gonna add cams to the OHV...I'd go all the way...pull the whole engine...bore and stroke it, polish heads, intake, and exhaust ports...and so on..and so on. Think I'll just wait, run this little OHV work horse to death...then add my cam by dropping in a SOHC from a later X. And if your gonna ask "why the SOHC instead of the 5.0"..then will have to start another post...lol... :D
