i have a 95 xlt it stutters bad when startd it throws a check engine light but no codes. we used a snap on scanner it keeps saying waitn for codes as the engine is chocking, we testd the resistance on the idle air control valve it was fine we noticed if you start it an unplug the mass air flow sensor the engine would run better so we check the voltage to the mass air it was good the we checkd the voltage of the actual sensor was .5 below specs of running proper but now we have compltly unpluggd the mass air an tryd starting it it ran fine for a bit now were back to the same symptons of stuttering an shuitting down an not starting for 20-45 mins so just curious if theres aything im over looking thanx !!

Why does this scenario in Kansas sound so familiar?

You think he washed the engine? I hear they do that in Kansas...

haha wow so the quality of air is worse is ks than brooklyn?

What fuel do you use? Brand and detergents, if any.. Have you changed the fuel filter?

just got the vechile have a reciept for new pump an filter from a local shop an have good fuel pressure as well checkd plugs, wires the resistance on the coil pack is good, the idile air valve resistance is good an i use unleaded 87

sounds like it could be a combination of things. Clean the MAF, and did you check the plugs and wires?

Did you have your fuel injectors tested and cleaned? could be a sticking injector causing a stumble.

how many miles are on this engine?

Have you run a vacuum test ?

i ran seafoam thru it an i havent really done anything to the vacum xcept spray choke cleaner around to see if i could get a better egine idle but nuthing an i checkd major gaskets couldnt find anything. an its quite a few around 150k

On top of all that- scrap the scanner and just read your codes with the CE light and a piece of wire or paperclip...

you have a link to how to do that im a mobile electronics tech haha not a wrencher unless forced an i actually just finishd changing the maf sensor it was bad but no it start a lot better but idles horrible it jumps down to 500 rpm an then bogs back up to 1200 rpm an flux constantly between an throttle response is horrible no the highest it will rev to is 5 ??
thanx !!!

In many ways you have a leg up on those who have been wrenching for years. Understanding the electronics systems on the engine is half the battle:thumbsup:

It would seem that to be the case

Here are some ideas:

An older IAC can test out perfect electrically but still be defective. I would try cleaning it and see if a difference is realized. Replacement is another idea if it is original. The actuating solenoid binds and sticks causing all kinds of idle and stall problems.

The MAF should be thoroughly cleaned (you can google to find many ways of doing that).

There is a special parameter called BARO that gives the health of the MAF over time. A 95 may not have OBDII, be sure you have the right adapter for the snap on. I'm surprised the snap on won't read.

Very helpful fellas, but...

It appears this member may no longer be here...

Ha! At least the thread will be available for info should someone need it...
