Matt's '92/'99 4X4 V8/4R70W swap!

I've decided this will be a Street truck for the forseeable future. With definate plans for a doityourself on the cheap homemade turbo or supercharger project.

I think I'll try out a 15" flex a lite style electric fan. Should have about 22-2400 cfm.

I'll be trying out the 4.0 rad. To see if it's adequet. Info for future swapers.

Judging by how far the shaft for the stock mechanical fan sticks out from the water pump I may not even need to relocate the radiator after I cut down the waterpump shaft.. But we'll see when we get there.

I beleive the '99 5.0 has a factory shortie style water pump.

Here's an easier question. Does the stock computer require a vss signal from the tcase tailshaft? Cause my speedo needs a standard cable/gear setup. And I can't have both.

I think the computer I got was a ..... '96 maybe.

yes the explorer 5.0L has the serpentine shirt front dress, the shortest water pump shaft you will get.

4.0L radiator is more then enough to cool your V8, the E fan... well make sure you do a full shroud and we shall see, I am a big fan of the stock clutch and metal fan
E fan = maybe
Its not as easy to fit as you think, dual fans would be easier, but it all depends on where you put your engine and radiator.

keep in mind puller fans cool far better then a pusher fan and you need a shroud or the air will just bypass the radiator

Any thoughts on the Vss.

I am using the VSS in my 1354 t case, works great
I plan to remove the cable driven speedo however and use the 8.8 mounted sensor instead....I have a 97 explorer rear end so I should be able to use the sensor in it for the VSS, talking to my 97.5 computer......I want to run a Autometer 5" speedo in my dash, electronic,. no more cable.....

Whats your dilema with the VSS?
Is my 93 style VSS sendingt he correct signal to the 97.5 5.0L PCM, probably not! Could be why my shifting is all jacked up (OD shift can hapen at 35 mph) but that can be tuned

What I'm saying is the does the computer require an electrical signal from the speed sensor?

Because I can either install the electrical Vss in the tcase so the computer has it's info.
Or I can use the cable/gear setup and have a working speedo. But no electrical signal for the comp.

Correct?

my 1993 t case has a cable driven speed sensor, the cable goes through it and goes to the speedometer. The sensor itself has two wires, one of the wires goes directly to the PCM

So yes you need a VSS signal to the PCM
The 5.0L PCM also gets a OSS signal from the output shaft speed sensor inside your 4r70w transmission

Your t case speed sensor will work, it does on my truck...... your gear driven speedo cable / sensor has a wire for the PCM, it works! It may not be the same signal the 8.8 speed sensor would send, but for my 97.5 computer it works. I believe the 97.5 5.0L mounty my computer came from would also have a t case mounted/cable driven vehicle speed sensor, it wasnt until 98 they went to the 8.8 mounted sensor only?????

If you're using the computer from the '99, then just pull the VSS from the RABS. The tcase VSS sends a slower signal so it would not work with that computer.

Your setup would probably be optimal since you could keep the cable driven speedo but still have the correct signal for the v8 computer.

EDIT: Wait, which tcase are you using?

okay so I now have a dilema
LOL

I am using the 97.5 Mercury Mounty computer, so my engine has P heads but I dont have PATS
Does this truck use the t case mounted speedo or the 8.8 mounted speedo?
I have a 97 8.8 with the sensor in it, I may need to wire my PCM VSS signal to my rear axle!!

Dang I need an OBD-II scanner/tuner
I leave my OD off because it will kick in at 40 MPH if I dont LOL I dont use OD until like 60mph+

Here is what I've experienced.

When I connected my tcase VSS sensor into my RABS, the speedometer was about 4x too fast and would just quit at about 60mph then drop to 0.

When I didn't have the tcase VSS plug into anything, the truck would run sorta fine, but the shifting was a little off like you mentioned. Does your truck not downshift like it should while going up a hill?

It doesn't sound like you're using the wrong sensor. It sounds like you're not using one at all. :D

my truck downshifts just fine, put foot in it, it grabs second gear
I am sick of the bouncy speedo the cable setup gives me
I am going to all Autometer electronic gages in the dash and plan to use OBD-II friendly gages, no more cable.

my speedo in the t case is wired directly to my PCM, so its getting a signal! Just the converter lock up and the 3-4 shift comes at weird times (4.1 gears and 35" tires of course it comes at weird times, until I tune my computer)

my speedo is cable driven, it doesnt change with different sensors, I could tell you if I had an OBD-II scanner hooked up and could monitor the VSS signal LOL

poor cornfused BII PCM, sorry to hi-jack but this discussion will benefit this thread too! right? right? LOLz

Ah ok I didn't know that the cable setup had an electrical pickup as well.

I'm going to use a 4406, 410 is using a 1354.

Jaime. My a4ld can shift into od as soon as 40-45. I've never had any problems with it.

My axle is still a 92. Will I have a sensor in the rear?

yes your 92 has a RABS sensor inthe rear axle, I believe it is the same sensor that the 98's use to get their VSS signal from

your 4406 has the sensor or no? I cant remember
You using the 99 computer?

Like section said if your using the 99 computer your 92 rear axle sensor will feed the computer, the speedometer on your dash still wants a cable, so you would use the 4406 sensor for this, just dont hook up the wires!

next question is:
92 RABS sensor and 99 ABS/VSS sensor the same? they use the same stator ring in the 8.8?

I haven't got the tcase yet but I am looking for a 96-97 cause they have the gear on the output shaft I that the cable drive needs.

I beleive the sensors on the rear axle must be the same. Since the rear axle/disc brake swap is a complete bolt on. Minus the parking brake cable.

I bought an early computer to avoid the pats and returnless fuel system. I believe it was a '96 maybe a '97.

Ok so it's looking like I'll be able to use my stock speed sensor with the new computer.

Jaime,(do you mind me calling you that by the way? I don't think I've ever asked.)

I've been rereading your swap thread. And I have a few questions:

Do I take it from the fact that you used one that a shifter for an aod will work for the 4r70w?

Also. From what I understand you used a power steering hose from a 93. But as far as I can tell the ps pump will be sitting about a foot higher in the bay than my stock on does. How could the cable reach?

you route the PS hose like I did :) thats how it will reach! once you have the PS hose in your hand you will see, it makes it no problem with room to spare

You can call me Jamie all day long, thats my name LOLz

AOD / AODE / 4R70W shifter has this pattern:

PRND21

they are the same
the key is the shifter pawl IN the transmission must match your shifter and cable

I used a 96 Mustang shifter, the 96 stang had the 4r70w :)

You can use your column shifter with some modifications
the A4LD is:
PRN OD D 2 1

obviously you dont need the OD position, so you can modify it to be like the AOD by removing the 1 position, so
P = P
R = R
N = N
OD now = D
D now = 2
2 now = 1

the old 1 position gets blocked off (welded up)
My buddy Joe Dietz has a HO 5.0L and 4r70w in his 93 exporer, hes using the a4ld column shift, welded up the detent for 1, and he actually built a new clear plastic indicator for his gage pod that reads correctly, very fancy hand painted with orange paint :)

I never had a column shift so I went with a Stang floor shifter, with stang cable & bracket, stang shifter lever inside the trans, cable comes from the back of the trans, then I modified my shifter gate so it locks in 1 and 2 as you saw in my thread

Shifter was a PITA LOL, you can drive it though just by pushing and pulling in the cable until you get it all figured out

If I had $400 I would get an Art Car gate shifter for an AOD-E

I think I'll use the column shift and get a floor mount later down the road.

Please excuse my ignorance and explain to me what a shifter pawl is.

I suppose it's the 3" long cylindrical device with the cable bracket on one end?

Oh I forgot to say.

Happy thanksgiving!!1!

And be careful with the black Friday.

I was at a koles(sp?) this morning at 5 with some friends and a lady standing in line passed out and koncked her head on a shelf. They had to call an ambulance.

Some employee died this morning in the stampeded, in NY.
