I did a search and found little on this topic.

My tire says max PSI 35. Do I put the tires at 35 when cold? Or do I account for the raise in temperature by over/under inflating the tire?

The MAX psi is a cold rating. Every vehicle is different, and individuals choose different softness, by changing pressures.

Start with say 33 cold in front, and about 30-31 in back. Drive it and evaluate how you like the ride. If it is really too harsh for you, then lower the pressures slightly.

The goal is to use as much pressure as possible, for good fuel mileage, good safe handling, but not too much that the tread wears too fast down the center. Even tire wear is what you want, by running as much pressure as possible. The MAX psi rating, and your personal feel, will limit how much pressure you find to be best.

Watch the tread wear, check pressure often, use one good single gauge for one vehicle. Good luck,

CDW is right on. It's a matter of preference. If you want the softer ride go with the lower pressure. I usually split the difference between the tire specs and the door sticker of the vehicle. If the tire says 35 and the door says 28 I go about 31.

I wouldn't go any lower than 30 in the tires if this was my vehicle. I'd say the best range for you would be somewhere around 30-33psi.

All,

Thanks for the info. I noticed some unusual tire wear on my x so I thought I'd better ask. They were inflated to 46 PSI!! The ride was horribly rough. Lowering the pressure to 33 made a much smoother ride. My CD player doesn't skip anymore on larger bumps.

Thanks again,
Shawn

46 is very dangerous. Could of caused a blow out.

Why?

different tires have different psi ratings...some require more, and some require less. Are you running stock size tires? Or larger aftermarket tires...cause that will also play a big role in determining correct pressure as will outside temperatures, weight of vehicle, and so on.
For my 2door sport... my 31" BFG's ran (street) @ 30psi up front, and 28psi in the rear. I got 80K+ out of them. My 32" BFG's I run at 28psi in the front and 26 in the rear. If I'm on a road trip I air up some. If I'm playing in the dunes I air down to 14front/ 11 rear. In the heat of the summer when desert temps reach upward of 100 degrees I usually let 2-3psi out to allow for expansion.
Best thing you can do is chalk test them if you really want to maximize optimal tire pressure. Do a search, I'm sure you'll find posts on the "how to's" of chalk testing. Good luck, J

I'm running bfg rugged trail at 22psi, i need to in order to cope with the sand out here NT Aust, we only have 20mile of bitumen where i live. i have no problem with bogging in sand at 14 psi, inflate to what ever floats your boat.
