Having read the many threads on this subject one thing is clear.Where Mercon V is specified use it and nothing else.
In South Africa I have a problem.Ford SA no longer stock Mercon V ,their reason being that for many years now Ford SA have not sold any vehicles in this country that require Mercon V .
My 1997 Ex with the 5R55E auto box is now due for replacing the transmission oil ( oil is dirty and has a hint of a burnt smell ).
My enquiries at Castrol and Caltex ( Chevron/Texaco ) have given me a substitute ,namely, Castrol Mercon V which is still freely available and an imported Chevron product called simply Synthetic ATF HD.I have read the spec sheets for both these ATF products and both meet all the original Ford Mercon V specs.
I'm biased towards the Castrol product as it's available in 500ml bottles and is reasonably priced.
Would like some feedback on whether one can safely use the Castrol product and whether anybody ever had any adverse effects.
