Modifications for 5.0 AWD for more hp

yeah im pretty sure you dont have an engine oil cooler. yes the filter mounts below the water pump but besides the PS cooler and the tranny cooler 5.0 ex's do not have a factory engine oil cooler. that was a GM innovation that remains a pain in the neck.

All the 5.0 AWD explorer's have these--

Oil cooler--

Skip the jet- or for that matter most any off the shelf chip- the gains are minimal as they can't cope with the extra flow of the headers. A custom tune would be money better spent.

EDIT: I have a superchips tuner, it makes more power and firms up the trans, but my MPG goes way down when I run it.

my truck doesnt have that. My hose goes from the radiator straight to the water pump.

Hey guys this is my first post here and wanted to see what you guys think about my list of mods i'm budgeting for my truck. It's a 98 xlt awd 5.0. I only have 50k miles on it. I only pull a 10ft enclosed trailer and very rarely a 26ft camper. So I'm really doing these mods just because like most of us I can't leave anything alone. So I was thinking of about a 1k budget or somewhere in that area.

1. TM headers
2. Gibson catback 2.5 diameter so that I get the back pressure for torque that everyone talks about.
3. k/n air filter
4. the ford racing 1" intake spacer kit.

I don't want to go crazy inside the motor so i thought this would be a good package. Any opinions?

Mark

Not sure if this has been touched on in this older thread, but the BW 4406 manual transfer case is likely the best mod I have done to my 5.0L 96 for towing my boat

2wd on highway = better power for pulling/passing and MPG
4xLOW = THANK GOODNESS
The lake we visit is launch on the sand , AWD is not going to get my 21' Bayliner out of the water in this stuff, I need 4low for lake Mac...
I got stuck once already and had to pay a tractor to unstuck the boat and then launch it = SUCKS

AWD is cool and its safe but it robs power, it eats tires, it eats the front end and steering, and it sucks gas $$$$$$$$

DO THE TORQUE MONSTERS!!!!
The #1 best thing I ever did for my truck. I ould say if there is 1 thing you should do, (even though its expensive) DO THE TMs!!!

Be sure to mention the site for a Member discount :D

I also have a 4406 but I havent put it in yet....

Doing a Solid Axle Swap (SAS) with a HD High Pinion D44 from a 78 F250.

The Mutineer is in the Garage now getting the front end chopped off for the SAS, wont be done till March of 08 since Ill be in Iraq for the winter.

The Mods you listed look like an awesome start that wont put you out of the running for the towing you need to do.

GOOD LUCK BROTHER!!!
