I am looking to upgrade my existing 4.0 SOHC with a fresh V8. I have been looking at some possible swaps but im not sure how hard the swap will be. I would really appreciate any help or pointers from someone who has done the swap. I haven't talked to one of my friends that is a Ford Tech/Mechanic about the swap because i wanted to know exactly what i can do.

Thanks
Calvin Warner

Choices

You have choices its up to you which way you want to go.

1) Carbuerated or Fuel Injected.
2) 302 or 351

But you have to notch the heater box, you'll need an oil filter relocator, V8 motor mounts, tranny mount, fuel pump, body lift would make it easier for the transmission tunnel to clear, V8 radiator which has to be relocated but theres a good fabrication thread on here for that, and wiring you can do a search on here for that also. But the big thing is planning and realizing this can get expensive. But good luck and hopefully I will start the 351w efi swap soon and be able to give you more assistance.

NOT REALLY
He has a 99 truck, so if you ask me he has 1 choice

remove SOHC drivetrain, bolt in Explorer 5.0L drivetrain
he will not have to do any of those things you listed since the 99 truck came with a 5.0L, it will bolt in.
there are a few things that will need to be addressed like the PATS security key system, but none of what you are talking about applies to a 99

whats wrong with the SOHC 4.0L? The 5.0L makes the same power, but it does have alot more potential and a much better transmission.
The 5.0L Explorer only came in AWD or 2wd, so a 4x4 t case is harder to obtain.

I would but the entire truck, a 98 or newer 5.0L with as few miles as possible, park it next to your 99 and start wrenching, you could have it running in less then a week if you are prepared

Was there a DIS 351 in anything ever?

You know for some reason I was thinking he had a Gen 1, sorry about that.

Not that I have ever seen but I am sure you could use the 5.0L computer to run the 351, or an aftermarket DIS.

But you'd need a CMP with a long enough shaft to reach the cam.

Maybe I'll head over to the Spas 302 351 thread. :D

you dont think the 5.0L cam sensor would work in a 351 block?
I bet it could be made too, hack off the 351 distributor drive gear or machine something up if this is the only thing keeping you from going to a 351 block :)

Also I like the way you think, I have thought about this a time or two, 351 + 4 door ex might jsut be able to pull my Bronco on a flatbed around a bit

Or the 351 ex could replace your b2 and the b2 could haul the ex on a flatbed. J/K

I'll have to look into it. I bet a 351 would be a nice upgrade.

Talk to Todd ( tsmoko?)
Didn't he have oil pan-pickup issues in his ranger 351 swap?

exhaust is also higher.

however, you can get 427 cubes from that deck height.

Yeah.. I remember his custom oil pan. But since I have no crossmember anymore.. I wouldn't need to worry about that. :D

I think Todd is where I got the idea that you'll have to have a custom CMP made... maybe.

i wonder if the lower intake could be milled down enough to allow the 5.0L sensor to work?

teh BII has PLENTY of power, especially when I remove 1000# of weight next, the BII may get a cam and some rollers however :)

Section I got some advice from a friend, check marine applications for a cam sensor in the 351
