i would like a little more sound from the ol 5.0. whats the popular muffler to use?

Ive heard good things about the flow master 40 and 50 series. The 40 is their loudest and the 50 is fairly loud.

IMO Magnaflow is the only way to go. Flowmasters sound like **** and have a horrible resonance at highway speeds.

For the record Im only running a v6 which can be a lot different than the 5.0.

how would it sound with just a muffler swap? i dont want to do much else, just get a little better sound

ill get a nice tip on it, and the muffler, thats as far as i want to take it.

Thats about all I want to do also. delete the cats since i don't have an emissions test for my inspections and the muffler since I already cut my pipe so it dumps down under my bed. However the muffler will make a little more noise. Not really sure a tip will get you all that much sound difference.

x2. Flowmaster 40 on my 4.0 has a horrible drone all the way through the rpm range, don't know how it would be on 5.0 but its the way the mufflers are designed...

Even just a larger tip will make it louder. You will have to listen around online and figure out what you like the best. Good exhaust sound is pretty subjective and it is going to be different depending on how your engine is configured.

FIND is right. Tips do make a difference. I put tips on my exhaust and it made a drastic difference. In a good direction too! Here's the link to the 5.0L exhaust thread in the modified 95-01 subforum:

I've been all over that 4.0 thread haha. I don't want to do tips since I already cut a foot and a half off so it was better protected from rocks and other dangers to exhaust. But I do want to do something with the muffler and maybe the catalytic converters.

Honestly,

Homework is the only way to get a grasp on what sound your trying to ultimately accomplish. Even then, It might take you a few visits to the muffler shop to get it right.

Some people go by polls. Some by mathematical equations. Some just hear another vehicle get on it and say "I want mine to sound like that!". Others spends a lot of money and time to figure out "that's good enough". Others just buy what the cool kids have to be "IN", then brag about it in a signature on an online forum, then laugh at anyone who doesn't have it.

Eye of the Beholder is what it boils down too...

EF, YouTube and the hundreds of other car sites are your friend if your trying to come up with the exact sound of perfection you might/will want from your rig.

In my experience, spend some time dissecting any and every combo you hear, making note of the diameter, length, configuration and muffler type, least of all the displacement and engine type of the motors. After spending 100's of hours finding exactly what configuration will produce the sound your looking for, build it! After all, no matter what sound comes out after you finally build it, you will have convinced yourself it's perfection (after the time and work it took to come to that conclusion) and no one will ever be able to tell you different.

You will then be completely content knowing you have the baddest sounding Ex in the land; And you will be the only one who will ever know it.

I completely agree, i absolutely love the flowmaster that i have on my 4.0, but it is way too raspy for most peoples taste. It is all about preference, and i dont mind the raspyness
