mustangs and explorers

Actually, some of us do have aluminum blocks in our Mustangs.... ;)

No reason to limit yourself to the 03 Cobra crank. You can get used steel cranks from www.stangparts.com for about $150. The only problem with the buildup you suggest is that the 03 Eaton blower and intake will not match the 2V heads sitting on top of the Explorer motor. You will need to perform a complete 4V conversion, and at that point it would be cheaper and easier to install a complete 99/01 DOHC motor from Bishop engine and use a centi blower instead. Save money and make a lot more than 400 rwhp. Or even better, get VT engine to punch an aluminum 4.6 block out to about 324 c.i. and make that kind of power N/A. Of course you'll need a new fuel system to support that much power. I feel that there's actually a lot of parts available now for the 4.6 motor, its just that they aren't nearly as affordable as 5.0 parts, yet. :(

I wouldn't put a Mustang intake on an X as I would think it would make it slower. The X intake is designed to make torque which you need to pull a boat, climb a hill, etc. Plus an X weighs more.

The Mustang intake wouldn't slow the Explorer down in a race. The truck intakes are tuned to make low-end torque, but the only time you get to use any of that low-end torque is off the starting line in 1st gear. Beyond that you will always be in the mid-to-top end of the RPMs, and you need more air to make more power there. You have an excellent point when it comes to towing, however. At highway engine speeds you could lose 10-20 lb-ft (I don't really know, that's just a guess) and you'd notice that loss pretty easy.

Thats what Blk Mk8 said he could do for me durring the summer if I get an 03' 4.6 Mounty. Basically just drop the 03' Cobra engine itself in which would fit perfectly. But the 03' Cobra engine runs about 11 or 12 thousand when they came out, not sure what their asking for now.

I think I'll just stick with modding the sohc 4.6 for now, thats if I don't get an 03' Cobra instead;) . The modular engines are about the best engines for responding to mods.

Kennebell should have their charger ready soon to replace the Eaton unit on the 03' Cobra....now that will be friggen sick with bolt on's. Considering Lightning owners can pick up about 70-80rwhp alone by just swapping for a twin-screw, you'd probably see about the same gain especially when you take into account that theres not another engine made (probably ever) that responds to mods like the 03' Cobra block.

MMMmmmm...drop in the 03' Cobra engine into an 4.6 Explorer/Mounty, swap on the Kennebell charger w/ their Blowzilla upgrade and regualr bolt-on's:eek: That would be easily be deep into the 10's with slicks.

SaleenEXP FYI-

Nitrous Pete Misinsky just recently put down 790 rwhp in his 2003 Cobra running a Kenne-Bell Flowzilla and a small 50 shot. Fuel system is stock except for 50# injectors and a custom tune. He's making 23 psi, so he's having to use race gas. This is through an automatic slushbox, so if you assume ~17% loss through the auto that puts him at ~950 hp at the motor....

if a supercharger kit will fit the 02-03 mustang would it therefore fit the 02-03 explorer?

I was reading about that about 2 weeks ago. F'n sick is all I have to say about that lol. He's running a Lentech auto right?

My friends 03' Cobra has about 475rwhp on the dyno with only some bolt-on's and pulley swap. Had his 4.10's installed along with Nitto drag radials, heh, heh, he and I were in it and raced a friends Z06 with some mods, we destroyed him. 4.10's are insane on 03' Cobra's with mods.

He got walked Dead Link Removed

Dead Link Removed Dead Link RemovedThe 03' Cobra

EDIT - Tom Clancy , Kennebell has a twin-screw charger made for the 02'+ 4.6 (sohc)Explorers/Mounty's.

EDIT AGAIN - My mom and I went to Dunkin Donuts today and their was an 03' Cobra out side in the dark Silver/Grey, so I was showing my mom it, she likes fast cars anyway so she liked it. The color was gorgeous, almost perfectly matched the 03' Cobra rim color which is like a magnesium/grey/silver color. It was really nice in that color.

03 Eaton blower and intake will not match the 2V heads sitting on top of the Explorer motor. - know.... lol.. i was half asleep at work when i tyed that.... i realized what i typed on the way home and was like oopppsss... correct the 03 blower wont bolt to the stock 2v heads....i would go with a roots blower though is what i ment.

I can understand having an intake/exhaust setup designed to make low-end torque, seeing as how the modular has absolutely NO low-end power at all. That motor IMO doesn't belong in a truck, it belongs in a sports car with a light frame, and smaller tires where the engine can rev up faster and put out its power.

The 300 inline-6 was the best truck motor Ford ever made, and probably the least known about also. The modular is too revvy for a truck, but who cares? Apparently all engines have to be revvy to be any good these days. Can't beat a modular's top-end performance I will say that :D

I really can't wait for Ford to increase the redline to 8-9K. The modular motor is nowhere near its peak performance level, and just imagine for a second, a 9,000 RPM V-8. Imagine what that would sound like... *Drools* And then imagine the power it would put out. We're talking an engine that would put ANY other motor to shame. The modular is the future, and it WILL be the best V-8 ever made, you watch it. But it's still no truck motor :p

if the explorer has 2V heads what does the mustang have? what does that mean exactly?

Valves per cylinder. I think the Mustang has 4 (not positive): 2 intake and 2 exhaust valves per cylinder.

Weight matters!

The Mustang weights about 3200 lbs.
The Explorer weights about 4500 lbs.

Thats 1300 lbs. difference!

Hell thats a Suzuki Samurai almost!

Weight matters!

But does it matter when you are trying to figure out HP at the motor. Thats what we are trying to figure out.

No, a motor is a motor. To truly determine crank hp anyway you put the motor on an engine dyno; does the weight of the vehicle matter then?

Thats exactly what I was trying to point out. I just forgot to write it.:D

Mustang GT's 96-up have 2 valve, SOHC.

Mustang Cobra's 96-up have 4 valve, DOHC.

since we're discussing stangs and ex's let me know throw in im looking to trade my 2002 mustand gt for a new explorer. email me or look me up on aol (blackhawk98ss) if interested. will also just sell for $20k. has 4750 miles fully loaded.

The question that I have is..... would I benefit from swapping heads with a newer GT? Or what would be nice is to get some Saleen heads or intake! But thats only a dream. Lets ask this, so if the newer 4.6 mustangs (excluding the cobras) parts are interchangeable wouldnt the Saleen, roush, & steeda parts sway as well?
