Yes, my tranny went today. Yesterday it was working perfectly, today it started letting go. I was able to limp to my mechanic's shop though, so avoided towing costs.

I'm gonna stick with the 4R55E, but what options do I have? We looked around and only saw the Transgo kit, not one from TCI or B&M. But basically any part my mechanic can tweak or replace to make it better, he is. He's gonna machine the clutches to fit more and stuff like that. And the torque converter is gonna be a new replacement unit, though he's gonna investigate about stall speeds.

I was expecting it to go sometime between 60 and 80k, I have almost 64k on the odo. My mechanic honestly said that it wasn't my power or driving that caused it, they're just crappy. Also is the fact that it didn't grenade on the track, but during everyday driving.

Well thats it, and I'm depressed :( Oh well. ok89, sorry you wont get to see my truck this weekend. But on the bright side my mech said it's most likely gonna take less than a week.

Alec, check for updates for the tranny before you rebuild. My tranny mechanic says they have updated it a little bit since it's debut in '95. Also, he kept stressing to me that this tranny is not simply a crappy A4LD and quite a bit stronger than one. He says out of explorer trannies he rebuilds A4LD's account for about 90% (maybe just because they're older). Anyway, just a little FYI.

I feel for ya though! I thought mine had gone about a month ago....

Yup, my mechanic is gonna check for all the updates. He said he was gonna spend some time on his computer tonight also looking around.

This blows.

Dang! Hopefully mine will last a little longer, I got 84k on my truck, and I don't believe it has ever been replaced, so im just limpin along. It will happen sooner or later. good luck, hopefully it wont cost you too much

Apparently he already got a lot done today, so hopefully I'll have it back by Tuesday. It'll probably be around $1200. I miss my truck, is that bad?

BTW, with a tighter transmission I'll probably be a bit faster :D

Thats to bad Alec, so did you ask him to give you a free T-case, now would be a good time to change it over.

Yes, this would be a good time to add a tcase, but I decided not to. I don't have the extra cash right now for the Tcase, driveshaft, etc. And I did well in Arizona and in Moab last year. I'm happy with only 2wd right now. The tranny dumped sooner than I thought, which kinda messed things up.

Maybe my next vehicle will be 4x4 and Splat will be the tow vehicle. I can dream, can't I?

Well, the 3 planetary gearsets are messed up also. They're $100 a pop, which brings the estimate close to $1500. Good news is that they're in stock, so I should still have Splat back on Tuesday.

Well, Splat has been in the shop until now. They're out testing it right now, so hopefully everything is ok and I'll get my baby back today!

I just got Splat back!!!

The new tranny seems to be very good. I haven't put it through it's paces yet though cause I'm letting it break in. The big difference that's immediately noticable is the higher stall torque converter. The new one stalls at 2800, while the stock one is around 2400. This lets the engine rev quicker until that speed and is better for 'the hole shot'. And it isn't too drastic of a change to affect the drivability of the truck on or offroad. Might cause me to rev a bit higher on the trail, but should give me more torque.

I'll let y'all know if there's anything else remarkable to report. Oh, $1576.00.

wow 15 days in the shop...that had to be really hard on you. At least now you have it back and good luck
