NEED another key for my 2000 Explorer

I need another key Help.
Does anyone know if this is a DEALER ONLY ITEM since there is suppose to be a chip located in the key or can a good locksmith cut me a key?

You should be able to get a key made at a locksmith, BUT it DOES have a chip in it (Which means it needs to be programmed) (The locksmith around here, also programs keys, thank god, but its about 70$ to have one made)

If you have two keys you can program your own. If you only have one the dealer or locksmith will have to do it for you. I have bought the blanks from the dealer, got them cut at Home Depot, then programmed them myself because I had at least two keys.

Why do I need 2 keys to program a new key? Anti-theft reasons?

I've got 1 key and it's pretty worn down and I'd like to replace it with a factory cut key plus add in a second. I'm at a loss as to how to get a "new" key when the only key I have is worn down.

Is it possible to replace the ignition with 2 different keys because well, I have no idea who has the second key that I should have got with the truck. Hate for some goober to walk up after I rebuild the truck and steal it with that old key.

You can buy a new key at the dealer. They are supposed to ask for VIN#, proof of ownership, and identification. As previously posted, if you have two working keys, you can program a third yourself. If you don't have 2 working keys, buy one from the dealer based on the vin #. This one should be pristine. You can then buy 2 more from the locksmith and have him program all 3. You can find keys with chips in them on ebay for less money and just have the locksmith cut the blanks and do the programming.
