My dad's trucks transmission won't go into reverse.

It goes into drive and shifts from 1-3 perfectly(hasnt shifted into 4th for a long time.) When you put it in reverse theres a light (LIGHT!) bang in the floor, so I know something is happening down there.

I got stuck in a snowbank and tried going in reverse and just spun the back tires. Locked the hubs and tried forward and was still stuck. Put it in reverse and nothing happened. Had to put it in low and melt the snow away to get un-stuck.

If anyone says something along the lines of 'rebuild' or something, I will reject your reply and substitute my own. A rebuild is almost %100 not an option.

Could it just be the O-ring for the low/reverse servo finally gave? Can't build any pressure to shift? It's had the 'slow-into-reverse' thing happening for quite some time.

Give me some good news :(

Your dad's truck is?

Automatic I assume from your post.

What make, model, year?

With an auto first thing is check the fluid level and smell, then the shift linkage then the wiring.

more info on the truck would help a great deal.

Oh sorry.

92 XLT 4x4 with the A4LD.

Linkage is fine and the reverse lights come on, theres also a light bump in the floor. It just revs though...

There was also no sign of fluid leaking when I crawled under.

BTW: 11,000 posts? Buddy...

We've also only owned this truck for less than 2 seasons. It was bought in the summer. The previous owner claimed to have blown the tranny pulling a friend out. Had the tranny rebuilt, then had to sell the truck to pay for the rebuild. So if it was actually rebuilt, theres less than 7-8 months on this transmission.

I would say to first drop the pan, and look for any signs of debris that could have come off of the reverse band. It's possible that you stripped off whatever meat was left on it. Even though it's only 8 months or so since it was rebuilt, they might have kept that band, and just replaced other defective parts. If it were rebuilt properly, you wouldn't have had no 4th gear shortly after a rebuild. That could be a valve body problem, like a solenoid, clog from fragments (coming off of a reverse band). They make an extension that could go onto the reverse piston that helps the delayed shift into reverse problem. That could buy you more time before opening the transmission just to replace the reverse band. There is a thread in this forum that shows this extension. Glacier said that it cost about $3 in that article.

Lets say I did strip the reverse band...now what?

tear it down to put a new band in it but you may try to adjust the band first to see
if that might help if it helps then maybe go with
the extended pin.

K...update!

Trucks in the tranny shop right now having the 2 o-rings replaced. If this doesn't fix it, I'm assuming I smoked the reverse band?

Can the band be changed after just dropping the valve body, or total rebuild?

ps. This morning I put the truck in neutral and it didnt move. But when I revved it to 4-5000 RPM, it started moving.

The reverse band has no adjustment on the A4LD. That's the reason why they made that extension pin. If the band is very worn, and won't engage, the pin will put a little extra push against it. The O rings are usually replaced when they do a rebuild. Ask the guy for the old ones back just to see if they were really replaced on the last rebuild 8 months ago. If the guy says that the O rings are still good, and don't need to be replaced, then have the pin installed before they close everything up.

So the extender pin will fix the reverse band problem if its just loose?

If there isn't anything wrong with the valve body (clogs), and the band isn't completely bad, the pin should buy you some more time out of the band. In order to replace that band, you would unfortunately have to open the entire transmission to get to it.

Didnt wanna hear that.

Thanks though, a lot.

yea youre right no adjustment on the a4ld im sorry i have the 4r55e it has no adjustment either but i needed to read the post better i was thinking he said second gear
