Guy's, let me say first that this site has really helped me the past 2 years when minor problems have occurred with my 97 EB 4.0 (SOHC) 2WD. Thank you all for your posts that help so many of us.

Ok...I have come across my first major issue. About a month or so ago, I was stopped at a red light and thought I heard a rattle in my undercarriage. After some brief investigation, I found that the rattle only is heard when I'm at a stop and have the transmission in 1, 2, D, and R. I've also noticed the rattle getting what seems a little worse. I now also here the rattle for a sec after I turn the engine off and the transmission is in P. The last thing that happened to me was on the interstate last week and the OD light started to blink at me. The transmission was shifting fine and still strong before the blinking OD light. The transmission seemed to have a little trouble knowing when to shift after the blinking OD light. That’s when she got parked until I could fix her.

I started to research and found that it might be the TC bolts loose which could be accessed though the starter port. I took the starter off and all 4 bolts were tight. Oh! and when I drove the Explorer to the shop, the OD light did not blink and the transmission shifted like nothing was wrong.

I had a friend hold the brake and shift between D and R and all the rattling sounds like it is coming from the torque converter.

The transmission has 179,000 and has been very well maintained although that really has no effect on when your tranny might go bad. The fluid is still a nice red color and has no burned smell to it.

Does anyone have any other ideas or where i could find a cheap rebuilt TC?

Welcome to this forum! Did you check any local torque converter rebuilders? There is one in Queens, NY, but he will need your old one as a core. You would have to pay for shipping your old one to him, then for shipping the rebuilt one to you. A local rebuilder would be a better choice.

I will defiantly check local rebuilders. I read in some other threads that I might be able to pick one up for under $100.00? I now at least will have to pull the tranny and might find that it’s not the TC after all! I might have some time later this week. Thanks for the help.

Does anybody suggest a good manual to download for pulling the tranny?
