need some quick input and directon on lifts

First off I dont' believe anybody told him to use the search.

I have the SL 5.5 with 33 12.50 and have just a minor rubbing issue. I would run 4.56's if I was you espcially if you think one day you will run 35's.

Stay away from Body lifts, most people end up removing thiers.

I looked at BDS and, at least for a 91 like I have, they don't have a kit. I looked at the Ranger kit, but it does not have extended radius arms. Is that going to give me the articulation you mentioned above?

N0, BDS doesn't have extended radius arms, and they are better. What I like about BDS is their brakets are super strong, and everything has the best warranty in the business.

BTW, Ranger kits will work, but you will need to do an spring over out back to gain your 5.5" lift.

If I could do it from pieces, I'd pick the BDS brakets, the Duff long arms, BDS (or Deaver) springs, Bilstein shocks, Super-Runner steering, and some other mods for travel like the F250 shock mounts - long shocks, long brake hoses, etc. That would make about the best off-the shelf package possible. Now, if we could only get one manufacturer to make a kit with all that stuff in it for a decent price, we'd be all set.

so if i got the classII i could make it a 6in suspension?

so 4.56 are good gears with 33s? i think ill only go to 33s most likely..and i plan to gear..but i want to wait to kno wuts right..i do a lot of city/smalltown driving..more then highway for sure..and its not all for show..but i do liek the show factor, and i wont be rock climbin or on too bad a camber hill i dont think..and if its a problem i will avoid em lol..i hav a cj7..and thats wut i use for stuff liek that..so i do care about show with this is suppose..it being in great shape..

Yes. All the major components are the same for both 4" and 6" lifts.

Check out the SkyJacker installation manual 234RHK-A PDF

Notice the 1st page indicates the kit is for both the Ranger and Explorer models.. It seams they stopped advertising it for Explorers.. Anyway on illustrations 1 and 2 you can see the the main TTB brackets; they contain both an upper and lower mounting hole for either a 4" or 6" lift...

Too move from a 4 to 6 inch lift you'd need to (not in any order):
* Move the axle pivot bolts to the lower position
* Install 6" front coils springs
* Install longer sway bar end-links
* Do a SOA (spring over axle) in the rear...

* maybe need new camber bushings
* maybe need new shocks
* may need longer drive shafts

welld ang..thought it'd be easier..is the 5.5 the "simplest" way i suppose to get up that high on a first gen? and could i leave my add a leafs in when i do the SOA and put the f150 coil seats up front..get up abuot 1 3/4 i belive for the oil seats and abouuut 1.5in in the back with m procomp AAL mroe then wut the lift woulda been..and use all the stuff that lift coems with and be alright

jsu to make sure..with a 5.5 superlift (SOA rear and 5.5 coil lfit up front) i will not need to lengtehn drive shafts will i?..

also..should i go ahead and not use the spacer up front and take OUT my AAL inthe rear then?

and again..i jus feel like im gunna over gear..4.56 is good fro my use? i will be around 2grand most of thet ime..city and backroad drivin..with moderate wheelin..mudholes, creek crossins, smaller uphills and stuff liek that..no rocks or huge inclines or cambers..and i want 33 1250s

With only the 5.5" lift you shoudn't need to lengthen your drive shaft but some people had to. Each vehicle is different. When I added spacers I had to lengthen my rear shaft.

I would deff. remove the AAL.

If your only going to run 33's I would go with 4.10's.

About that over-gearing thing...

I keep seeing that over and over on these posts.

A couple of points to remember...

Ford used a 4.10 gear STOCK on the Ranger pickup with 28 inch tires.

Many auto manufacturers used a 4.10 gear set in the rear of their street cars, often running 25-26 inch tires -- with no overdrive.

4.56 with 33s is spot on - just around 200 rpm over a stock setup with 3.73 gears and 28 inch tires.

Like I said above -- I'm running 4.10s with 33s and WISH I had the 4.56 gears!
My kiddo was running his Jeep XJ with 4.56 and 33s and it runs right next to mine -- only better. (He's now running 5.13s with 36s, and I'll be running 5.13s with 38s on the Ranger I'm building, but with a doubler t-case for better low end).

You will not be over-geared.

Now, 6.72s with a 33 tire -- that's over-geared! (the ratio in rockwells)

Here is a quick chart that I often use to figure out gear ratios with tire sizes. The chart is setup to indicate RPM @ 65 mph with NO overdrive, so factor in your overdrive (typically .25, so multiply the RPM number by .25) for final RPM.

Color code:
White -- out of possible RPM range
Green -- lower than stock RPM - economy gear - not for off-road or tow
Black -- stock RPM range - daily driver - all purpose, factory gear
Blue -- Higher than stock RPM - performance and power - off-road and tow

well thats awesome..thanks a lot glfred
so im pretty much lookin at 4.56 so do moderate trailing and mudding and do city and highway driving..daily driver for shorter distances..

also..wher can i find these gears then? good used gears im fine with..i dont kno the availability..so
but i've got stock pumpkins on both ends..

FYI, we drove my kiddo's truck from Louisville to Moab, Utah and back with the 4.56 and 33s. We probably averaged 85 on the freeway. No big deal. They are NOT overgeared!

You have to remember that as the tires get larger, they also roll out further. Changing tire size to a tire 5" larger in height gives you about a 16 " longer roll for every rotation (measure circumference, subtract the difference). that 16" roll is close to 18% difference in length from the stock tire. That means that you have to add 18% gear to roll the same way, have an accurate speedometer, and turn the same engine RPM.

The chart just makes it easier to see the difference between tire size and gear ratios easily. Anything in the black range is considered exactly the same as factory stock. 4.56 with 33s is in the black.

As far as gears, if you don't have a local dealer, call my son Jeremy at Moab Off-Road in Louisville. He can get you a good price on the gears and also get them shipped to you. His number is 502-962-8141.

If you have 3.73 gears now. you are all set and can just fit new gears to your carrier. If you have lower than 3.73, you will need new carriers, a great time to think about adding a locker!

Gears are available for your truck any time. They are common in the 4.56 ratio. Just remember that the front Dana 35 set is reverse rotation in your year truck.

If you need someone to set those gears up, it might be worth a road trip to get the entire job done over here. Otherwise, I'm sure that there are shops in your neck of the woods that could do the work.

(And, yes, for those that remember CoryL, this was his shop. My kiddo bought into ownership to replace Cory who left for other ventures.)

thats a question i forgot to ask about..how accurate or not will my speedo vbe with 4.56 and 33s?

You'll be going slower than what the speedo says by maybe 3-7% I think. I'm not 100% sure about the percentage.

Example: If it says you're going 55, you'll actually be going around 44-49 ish...

yeah l ook at the chart..compare 4.56 gearing with that size tire..look back on the thread..it will be slight overgearing..if your planning on going bigger eventually you can get away with it..but 4.10s would be good for 31s if your stayin with those..wut kinda stuff r u puttin the spldoer thru too?

wut kinda trans case do i have? its auto
