One of my co-workers has 95 Explorer and claims that he has factory lockers. I'm almost positive that he doesnt, and just want to make sure. So do you guys know if Explorer ever came from the factory with anything that can fool him into believing that he is locked front and rear (limited slip, electric locker, etc.)
I for one, never heard of such thing in Explorers, but you never know.

Please let me know.
Thanks

I've got a 95 Eddie with a 3.73 w/factory limited slip.

So he does have the limited slip in the rear... What about the front? From what I know, the only vehicle that has the ability to loc up front end is the Land Rover. Am I right?

He may have a limited slip in the rear. Look at the sticker inside the driver's door. Look for the code in the Axle column. It will be a 2 digit or 1 letter and 1 number code. If it starts with a 'D' he has a limited slip. If it starts with a number he has an open rear differential. No production Explorer ever came from Ford with any kind of limited slip in the front. If he has any kind of locker in the front, someone besides Ford put it there.

My code is D44... If been wondering for some time... is that Dana 44 by chance? or is it just a coincidence?

No it is still a Ford 8.8". That is all the Explorer has ever came with in the rear. The sticker on your door should only have two digits. A D4 was an option. The D would mean you have a limited slip and if your code is D4, then I believe it is a 3.73. I know a D2 is a 4.10 LS, I have one on mine.

Incidentally, one of the 4x4 magazines had an article a couple of months ago about the different ratings of various axles. The Ford 8.8" has a higher HP/Torque rating than the Dana 44 (not by much though). I can't remember the actual numbers but it was something like 750 HP for the Dana 44 and 780 HP for the Ford 8.8". If I remember correctly, only the Ford 9" was stronger in the comparison. I think the weakest was a Dana 30, closely followed by the Ford 7.5", then the Dana 35, Dana 44, Ford 8.8", and finally the Ford 9". I'll have to dig out the article to be sure.

I actaully have that article too. Does that mean that I don't have the LS? I thought someone on one of these forums told me I did... I'll have to run a search.

If the tag reads D4 then you do have a 3.73:1 Limited Slip rear end.

Thanks All!!!

See ya on the trails...
