New from Texas. 1996 AWD question.

I have a buddy who has a 96 5.0 Eddie Bauer Explorer AWD. It has 200k miles. It's been back and forth from Washington State. Engine and trans act very good. I'm very familiar with the 5.0 however I am not with the AWD system. Long story short I'm going to beef up the motor a little and turn it into my tornado chase vehicle. I want to see if the AWD system would allow me to take it into sticky/muddy situations and get me out if I needed it too. I'm not looking to rock crawl or bog though a swamp. All the help I can get would be great. If it's a good system I'll pick it up. He is going to sell it to me for 500 bucks.

Just kidding. Its a pretty bullet-proof system. I'd totally jump on it.
