Have a 94 explorer, have had it for 21+yrs without a single problem. (yeah, I'm one of those weirdos who is religious about maintenance]). Incident just recently (put in gear, have forward(with a lot of resistance and no reverse. I can hear the tranny cycle and go into gear. Put a code reader reader on it, all good. So I know it has to be in the transfer case. Never worked on before, but I do know its an electric control with the push button module up front for 4x4 and Low. I've got it up on jack stands in the garage and wondering where to start? any suggestions?

Welcome to the forum. Had something similar happen to a 99 Explorer Sport my wife owned. One day I went to back it out of the driveway, put it in reverse & it made a clunk noise & then it had no reverse. Problem was internal in the trans & it needed a rebuild.

Welcome to the site.

Could be wrong, but if you have no reverse, I don't think its the t-case. T-case doesn't care about forward or reverse just power from the trans to the wheels.

By chance is the e-brake on? Although it would move in reverse easier than forward. Just a thought.

Since its up on jackstands, do the wheels rotate in reverse?

Check your transmission fluid

Welcome to explorer forum

The 1994 bw1354 transfer case is very tough

Your auto trans however… usually when an a4ld fails first or reverse is the first thing to go. It maybe time for your auto trans to be remanufactured
But first let’s check the r fluid level. Fluid level is checked with engine running, on level ground at operating temp in park

Hi all, The saga continues:
Symptoms:
-While jacked up in the garage; started engine, let it warm up a bit and checked the tranny fluid. DRY stick, added fluid to proper level.
- Put it in drive; rear whiles turn.
- Put it is reverse; nothing
So fluid is ok, no leaks detected(dry stick was from replacng the vacuum modulator)
- Saw wires that were chafed, red and black, but those go to the speed sensor on the transfer case. Replaced the section wire and sealed the slider joints with double-wall heat shrink, stuffed the wire in corrugated tubing for protection.
-Looked at the tranny, the right side heat shield looks like it started digging into one of the solenoid valleys. So yanked the exhaust to get to it and reinstalled the heat shield properly (was held but the only nut on it the clips were not clipped to the body of the tranny, ugh!

weird I tell ya, suggestions for what's next is appreciated, you guys Rock!
