When you put back the valve is it supposed to snap in or just rest there in the hole in the grommet? I remember removing it didn't take much effort at all. Also there is a foam wrapped around the hose just above the valve. It crumble to pieces. What is that supposed to do? Thanks.

Which engine? On the SOHC it gets pushed into a rubber hose, and a plastic cap snaps to the top of the valve.

99 mountaineer 5.0. I wonder if the rubber that came apart to pieces was the grommet. it was about an 1 1/4" long and thick as well. Here is a video i saw and at the 41 second mark you'll see this same exact rubber i'm talking about. Is it a grommet?

There is a foam ring around above the pcv valve, the grommet is in the intake manifold. The pcv valve should fit snug. To replace the grommet, pull the pcv valve, stick your finger in the hole in the manifold and pull. The grommet should come out.

Not sure what the foam does other than insulating the hose from vibration wear.
