Hello!

On my '92 Ford Explorer.. I have no high beams!

This isn't a big deal.. but I'd like to have them if I ever needed them!

The headlights and everything else works fine, but when I turn on the high beams (and see the blue high beam signal light up on my dash), there's no light at all.

Can I replace the bulbs or do I have to replace the entire unit?

What types of these bulbs would I get if I can??

Thanks all!

The high beams may just be burned out. It's a simple fix, you just have to replace the bulbs. I don't remember exactly what the bulb #is , I think it's 9004. At any rate, you can look it up in the book or the computer "thingy" in the bulb section at any auto part store. Good luck with it! :)

It may just be that the high beam filaments are blown out as mentioned, though that's uncommon.

It's not a bad idea to replace the bulbs anyway. I'd suggest replacing them with either Standard 9004 bulbs from Sylvania, Philips, or GE, or if you want slightly brighter bulbs for not much more money, you can buy bulbs like the Sylvania Xtravision for a few dollars more than basic Sylvania bulbs. Be sure NOT to buy any of those $30-50 blue/white bulbs, they put out less light and don't last long.

If replacing the bulbs doesn't fix the issue, you may need to replace the headlight switch on the left side of the dash. It's pretty common for the factory switch to go bad, although it usually winds up causing the low and high beams to flicker or turn off then back on rather than just stay off, but different switches have different issues. Same as the bulbs, it's not a bad idea to just replace the switch no matter what, given the cost.

I should mention, if the multifunction switch turns out to be the blame, you can run the high beams through a toggle switch.

Splash a little ice cold water on them then blow on them. That's almost a guaranteed way to see them high beams.
