1995 Explorer XLT, V6, AT, 186k, battery died several months ago, while the truck was sitting(due to the rear cargo light being on). New battery installed yesterday, now truck won't start. Engine cranks just fine, doesn't catch. Theft light blinks normally, goes out when override switch is pressed. Fuel pump cutoff switch is ok. Can't imagine that anything went south just while it was sitting with a dead battery. Trying to sell the vehicle, can't get it started. Any help would be appreciated.

Can you hear the fuel pump prime when you turn the key to run? Could be a bad relay or fuel pump.

what kind of noise, and where would I hear it? I hear nothing when I turn the key to the ON position.

Tried the overrride procedure(IGN on, unlock 3 times, IGN off, unlock 3 times, IGN on, lock ONLY), doesn't seem to work(should lock-unlock). No smell of gas, normal cranking, relays test fine.

But, do you hear the fuel pump prime for about 2 seconds when you turn the key to the ON position? If not, check the fuel pump relay, the PCM relay, and the intertia switch. You can also try squirting some ether into the intake to see if it fires. If it does, then your problem is definitely fuel related.

When the batery dies the alarm says OH MAN I have to protect myself and does its job. Just disconnect the battery for about 10 minutes and that reset it. I did this once when I left my lights on. When voltage drops the computers get wacky. A little like hal on "A Space Odicy 2001". Okay showing my age a little.

This weekend, I'll get the VOM out and check things further.

Here's what I've done today:

Found the recessed black button on the dealer-installed alarm black-box. Pressed it. No joy.

Removed the negative cable of the battery for 15 minutes. When I re-connected the negative cable, hazards blinked twice. Alarm light on dash blinks once every 2 seconds. Great. Open driver's door, hazards start flashing, alarm light blinks very fast, interior chime is going off. Insert key, turn to ON, press recessed button on black-box, chime quits, hazards shut off, locks unlock and lock several times, alarm light goes out. Check engine light is lit, along with battery, and seat-belt warning. Turn key, engine cranks, doesn't fire. After about 10 seconds of cranking, hazards flash, locks unlock and lock several times. Turn ignition to OFF, remove key, dash lights remain ON for about 10 seconds, then go off.

Check under hood, with key on, jumping solenoid, remove spark plug wire, spark looks good. Cannot hear anything from the fuel pump. Can hear and feel the fuel pump relay engage and disengage when jumping the solenoid.

SO, I have to assume that the fuel pump went south while the battery was dead these last 4 months.

Unless I can find an electrical reason for the fuel pump not running.

Hmmmm? Got fuel but may not have spark. Maybe check fuses. Sorry Im not as familiar with the '95 electronics. I think thats when the change to OBD II took place.

Check the inertia switch to make sure it's not tripped and that the connector is firmly attached at the bottom. While you are there, use a test light to see if you are getting power to the switch. If you are not getting power to the switch, then the problem is somewhere between the ignition key and the intertia switch. If you are getting power there, then bypass the intertial switch and run power directly to the fuel pump to see if it kicks in. Replacing the fuel pump should be the last thing you want to do.

Tried the overrride procedure(IGN on, unlock 3 times, IGN off, unlock 3 times, IGN on, lock ONLY), doesn't seem to work(should lock-unlock). No smell of gas, normal cranking, relays test fine.

sorry to hijack but does anyone know if the overide procedure is the same for a 99 xlt or is there somewhere i could find the proper procedure??
