94 Ford Explorer
my hubby is trying to fix my mom's 94 ford explorer. She had it checked a few months ago and the dealership told her the cam sensor was bad. This didn't seem like a big deal since it ran fine. Therefore she didn't have it fixed. Now the problem with her truck is...it would stall whenever she put it in reverse. The next day it stalled many times going forward. Today it will not start at all. It does turn over and you can hear the fuel pump working. My husband did a test on the electrical system. It shows a definite electrical problem. Any ideas what it could be? Another question is, my husband has another tester. Apparently, this vehicle doesn't have a distributor. He is trying to locate the idnition module and we cannot find it. Could it be inside the cam sensor?

Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

Ignition module is behind the passenger headlight. I kinda like the first diagnosis. Given that it is about $35 and you lack the ability to do better testing, go for a crank sensor.

I am trying to avoid replacing the cam sensor since it runs from $350 - $600. I hoping to find something else wrong. Something that is cheaper and will get it back on the road.

crankshaft position sensor is only like a $40 piece.

Is the check engine light on?
You can pull the codes.
90% of the time the stored codes will point you in the right direction.

is that the same thing as a cam sensor? autozone wants 350 and the dealerships are telling me 400 to 600 just for the part. i'm wondering if we are talking about different things.

I am not sure. This is not a common problem on the OHV 4.0L, personally I would look elsewhere.

First place to start is at the battery and cables, also you should have the battery and alternator tested.

ok, i give up. we are towing it to the dealership for repairs. thanks everyone for your help.
