Depends on the size.. If your rig is gonna see more than 80% road, go with a all terrain tire like a BFG AT. For a 31 you will be pressed to find one below $100.

Your missing some info to help get good responses...

What is "off-road". Is it serious rock crawling, some dirt trails or kinda a combo of both? Do you run in mud or snow or ice?

Also, what size rims do you have now and what size tires are you looking for..

ok i will elaborate...im making this explorer my hunting rig and it will be going through mud, snow(every now and then), and most of the time it will just be on rocky dirt roads. i guess this would describe an all-terrain tire...the size i need is 235/75r15. basically i want a dependable tire that can take a decent beating.

On the bottom of our main page is a link for discount tire.. check them out.

I like to get my tires from onlinetires.com Good prices and in CA, so shipping to me is cheap. Another one in Ca is tirecrawler.com

I install them myself (at a neighbors house).. If thats not an option for you, see what Discount can do for you but I can't really say if they are cheap for your area.. Around here, they are about the same price as everyone if you don't take the road hazard waranty.

As for tires...

AT tires don't do well in mud..

Mud tires don't usually do well on ice (from what I've read, no ice down here)..

For a good All terrain, I've had very good luck with the BFG AT KO tires. They worked well on dirt and rocks and surprised me even on Sand (Glamis).. on sticky mud the become slicks though.

They wore well and didn't take much to balance them.. (I was replacing them at 40-50k miles and we have a rear locker which wears them out faster)

thanks maniak, that was very helpful. i hope to hit glamis as well just to help get a feel for my suv before i take it hunting. the high desert where i go is pretty unpredictable during the winter(sometimes there is ice, snow, water, mud, etc. hence the need for a good tire). i appreciate the info and will be checking those websites in a lil bit

...They work well in all the Big Bear conditions and are probably the best tire you can buy for all around...:biggthump

...I recently bought some tires from tirecrawler.com...They were dirt cheap on price, shipped free, same day as ordered to installer, and the install price was cheap too...

..When ordering online I called them..They took the order over the phone and no money..I paid at the installer..Btw, the installer was Allen tire at Harbor and La Palma...Greatest tire shop I've been to in years and they even put Nitrogen in the tires for free..

the size i need is 235/75r15.

...I just checked for you on the BFG AT KO's at Tirecrawler and they are $114.67..;)

wow thx...that is a price im willing to pay aswell...btw i got stuck in big bear with my dad. we were in a ford f-150 that wasnt 4 wheel drive and we had no business driving down this road in a truck that wasnt a 4 wheel drive lol

...Just a heads up...

..I just talked to Tirecrawler on the phone about some other tires...Seems like the tire MFR.'s slowed production due to the economy and BFG is on backorder if other sizes don't show up..There will also be a price increase in the near future from all MFR's as their raw material is also going up..

i appreciate the info tbars :)

check out treadwright.com

i have asat of the MT's and have bout 25,000 on them and still have over 1/2 the tread left. by far the best tires ive ever owned. and cost me round $500 for the set, shipped.

I was gonna suggest them as well. I haven't run them, yet. However my next set for my dd will be from them and if they have the right size the trail rig will as well. I have searched and searched for negative reviews...I've found none.

i checked out that site and there are 2 M/Ts in the size i need...the M/T (c) and the M/T (P)...what is the difference and is it worth it to get their "kedge grip" on it?

It sounds like this vehicle will be off-road the majority of the time. If you really want a good tire for what you are using it for you would want to go with a Maximum-Traction tire. The problem is that M/T's aren't good in snow. The answer to that is siping them. Places like Discount Tire (where I work) will take your tires and use a special machine to cut "sipes" into your tires. The advantage to M/T over A/T is durability. A/T's are great if you use your vehicle mostly on road and then occasionally go off road. If it sees almost solely off road duty you will tear A/T's up. I would recommend a tire like the Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac (Stay away from the MT-R Kevlar), the BF-Goodrich Mud-Terrain KM2, The Hankook Dynapro MT-RT03 or what I run on my truck, The General Grabber.

So you have compared both all terrain and mud terrain tires in the snow?

yes its worth it. i love my tires. i got them last winter in the snow season and even in 6 inches of snow and ice i coulndt get them to spin no matter what i did.
