oil difference

What is the difference between synthetic and regular motor oil? I've always used regular, should I switch, would it hurt to switch if I always use regular. Is there that much of a difference between 10-W40 (30) and 5-W40 (30)? I never gave this issue much thought, I'm just curious. Thanks for the help.

I used to use synthetic but it didn't get me anymore dates so I switched back to regular.

You will get many different opinions but I just use regular oil and change it every 3000 miles. I have a friend that uses it in his luxo import. Costs about triple or more than regular but he goes 7000-15000 miles between changes.
