Oil filter removal tool...HELP

The channel locks I suggest I have to use at like a 79 degree angle but it will work. You might want to even consider using K&N oil filters if available, they have a nut right on the end of it so you just attach a socket and pull it right out.

One thing you might want to do when you eventually get it off is get an oil filter relocation kit. Transdapt makes them, but I would recommend using hoses with adapters instead of their custom made hoses. I had leaks from them two times. Maybe they improved on them since then (I had them in 89)? Either way, good luck with getting the filter out.

Could you explain to me how they work? I jus looked it up and don't understand where everything gets mounted.

dlo - sorry about the delay...the thing I use is like the one others have described here in earlier posts. This one is thick aluminum and its made in the U.S.A so it must be old (compared to plastic and China today) Its made by Magnum and it has a place for a 3/8 extension. I use the longest extension I have and a breaker bar instead of a rachet because the bar swivels at the center of filter wrench. I couldn't use a regular oil filter wrench like the others posted here because it wouldn't grip tight enough and the handle had no leverage because of the way it swivels. I'm gonna try to post a couple of pictures of the tool here if I can figure out how.

When you get your filter changed make sure you don't use a wrench to tighen the new one. If you do you may NEVER get it off next time.

dlo...one other thing...if I could get my 96 X on a lift it might not be such a pain in the butt to change the filter but it is a pain when I'm on my back under it in my garage. I can't get my arms in the right position for leverage.

dlo - how do I post pictures here? I have a couple of the wrench I use to remove the 96 XLT oil filter.

You have to upload pictures to another web host such as Photobucket. The filter relocation kit has a part which screws on just like an oil filter. It has 2 lines for the inlet, and the outlet. They go to a remote filter head which mounts anywhere it's convenient for you. This part has the new oil filter screwed onto it.

Canton Racing makes a billet aluminum oil filter re-location "puck" that can be rotated 360 degrees, its built for tight clearance area's and is not prone to leaks like the cheaper pock metal block adapters on the market.

I used one when I did my V8 conversion over 15K miles ago.
the hoses that you use and fittings are very important as well if you want to be leak free and trouble free:

Here's my oil filter re-location. Its required for my conversion because the steering box is 1.5" away from teh sie of the block right where the oil filter would normally thread, but you can use these on any Ford engine I believe, contact Canton

as you can see using a remote oil filter mount like this one (with 4 ports) allows you to run the sensor or pressure line for an oil pressure gage, or another filter, or a temp sensor, etc.
I had to make a simple bracket to bolt to the radiator support and hold the oil filter mount. The hoses are trick blue silicoln with simple brass fittings, there is a swivel fitting on one end of each hose, the guys at my local racing shop said this is required if you want leak free operation (body, engine, frame flex)

I know I have a picture of the canton adapter to power steering box clearance and the hose routing around here somewhere

That is some damn good "What it looks like for your DIY install" of the oil relocation. Thanks a ton 410Fortune, HUGE help.

Where did you buy silicone hoses? All of the local auto parts stores only sell the regular black hoses, or the orange high temperature hoses. There is also a dual oil filter bracket for mounting 2 oil filters. AlDive has something called a bypass filtration system. He could go 25k miles on one oil change. It uses Amsoil filters.

I bought my hoses and fittings as well as the remote mount at a local speed shop here in Denver called

On Track Performance

I get all kinds of stuff from those guys

Another place to look is industrial hose suppliers. Just look in your local Yellow Pages.

Jegs and Summit Racing both supply them too.

I have bought a lot through Jegs over the years and myself trust there product.

My question is what size are the hoses?

depends on the size and type of your fittings. I used simple brass parts but you can go crazy with the aluminum aircraft hoses too

Jegs rules, I have no idea how many catalogs and stickers and hats I have

You know your wife loves you when two weeks before Christmas there comes a package in the mail from Jegs that you didn't order.

And yes, I now have about four sets of those 6 inch long stickers.

I use the socket style on my 2000xlt 4.0sohc, the socket was bought with the filter to make sure it was the correct one. It has never failed me. On the wifes QX4 it uses a socket that collapses to remove the filter...it is in a major hard to reach hole with no room for a regular wrench, you have to cup it from the bottom.
